Dark Egg Breeds Thread

I have a question and maybe it's buried in this thread which I have not read all 29 pages.
if you have marans that stop laying to molt, when they start laying, will the eggs be dark again or will they be lighter like when they stopped laying. I hope you understand what I'm asking, I know when they first start to lay as pullets, they lay the darkest eggs. but I have heard as the lay goes on, the eggs get lighter and lighter. so say a pullet is laying a 8 on the marans scale, lays for x months gets to a 5 on the marans scale, stops to molt, the question when she starts laying again, will they be back up to say a 7 or where she left off on a 5 and get lighter from there?

Great pictures of the eggs!!! I have to get a color chart to see where mine fit in.

I can't wait to see what my young pullets will lay. My older FBCM's are still practicing. One hen does lay a nice dark egg. One however is broody and the egg count is up to 14. The first set of eggs should be hatching I think next week. I'd have to look on the calendar. We counted Labor Day as the first day. If she hatches out a bunch and leaves the rest of the eggs I will put them in the bator. If it wasn't for her sister laying eggs on top of her we'd be ok.

The hen on the right should NOT be in the box...... lol. I've seen her sit on top of her sister. Here she seems to be telling sister to get out or move over...... lol.

I'm tempted to crack it over a piece of sushi and eat it raw with some flying fish roe.

But it's so tiny and cute, I think I'll save it....

A nice happy medium would be poke holes in it... drain it over sushi... and keep the cute little bugger.. ya know Christmas is coming up... A little shelac and some sparkles and i would hang it on the tree... maybe some decoupage.

No eggies for Geebies.... (molt) and oh joy it is raining again.... (ick squared)
