Darn bear

Did you take it down with the bow and arrow again, or did you use a rifle? I have a lot of respect for bears; when I was a kid, a sow with cubs showed up at the church picnic. That made a real impression on me. And appearantly it did on a lot of other people, there were no more picnics out of town.

Congratulations Panner. Glad to see you survived.

All this bear is spoken for, but you can have some of the next one. Seems like every month or so in the faal and winter we have a BIG problem with them. If you know where Westcott is, a bear got into a garage and made a mess of a freezer.

Rufus, I had to use a 12 ga. with 3" mags, loaded with 000 buckshot. I would prefer to use the bow just not at night. Same reason I didn't use a rifle. All kills must be clean.

Anyone that knows the state will come in and trap a bear for you. In California when this is done, the bear doesn't leave the property alive. This goes for any predator not just bears. As for darting one, that would be a joke, who would go down in the cayon to bring it out.

The main couses for this is those that have move in from the cities, DON'T HAVE CLUE what to do with their trash and bar-b-ques. Here we have to take our trash barrels about a mile to the pick up area. Must have a pickup, not a BMW or Lexus.
So the trash builds up for a few months before they hire someone to take it to the dump. Not only bear but rats and bugs. The other reason is the state has no bear hunting season.

Anyone willing to come here and show me a better way to stop the bear problem, is more than welcome. I PAY NO MEDICAL BILLS for those injuried tring.

Count me in!!!!!! I will be eagerly awaiting....um, no....that's not right......Gee I hope you never ever spot another bear and never have another family member or animal threatened or injured by a bear. But if you do happen to shoot one, I can't wait to buy some from you

So you can just shoot a bear in California? No permit or anything? I suppose it would be like shooting a coyote or fox (or feral dog) to protect your livestock - we don't have bears here is central Iowa.
I saw some posts about baiting and I believe I read
"I placed some fruit around the yard and I left the door to the shed open. My night will be spent on the deck, whch is about 7 yards from the shed. If the bear comes back, I will wait until it enters the shed, then turn on the lights."
That sounds like baiting to me. Don't let the California DNR know you did that because I'm sure it would be frowned upon. Maybe not if they just come in to trap then kill.
Anyway, congratulations on the clean kill and keep the fence on so anymore bears that are in the area will be your ignorant neighbors' problem.

No way, no how and no matter how hungry I am would I eat bear meat, deer meat, squirrel meat, rabbit meat, dove, quail, and I sometimes gag over chicken now that I can put it into a different context! Veggies burgers are often on my grocery list -- although my DH and son will not touch them! My daughter could eat vegetarian but the testosterone levels in this house demand red meat --they would eat your bear in a minute! --course someone else would have to cook it......

Well, you just ain't never been hungry.

Read King Rat by James Clavell, or any of the WWII accounts of POWs eating maggot-infested rice, or the occupied Dutch subsisting on tree bark and tulip bulbs, or the seige of Leningrad where they ate the glue from book bindings after everything else was devoured . . .

Panner, this is an interesting thread. Thank goodness we don't have bears here in SW MO yet. I have heard they are in AR. Anyway, I was wondering--apparently you butcher and eat the meat (or give it to people who do) Do you cure the pelt, or just get rid of it? Just curious. And save the claws? I know Indians used to make necklaces of the claws. I would LOVE to have a real bear claw, if you ever have one left over. Would be more than happy to pay postage, etc. LOL but I imagine they are popular items. Glad you got him safely.
