Darn bear

I sorry, I am to understand that you are baiting the bear?? My guess is that even in California that’s illegal. Why don’t just turn the fences on again? It is ridiculous to place a food source (feed, chickens, etc) out in bear territory and then become surprised that the bear finds it. The fact that this isn’t the first time seems to indicate that your chicken yard is a little too tempting and the deterrents insufficient. My bet is you will kill this bear and come Spring more will be lined up at your fence. Ridiculous. My hope would be that at least you have a bear hunting/depredation permit to keep all of this on the up and up.

Sorry about your dog.

Jim

Thank you Jim! Atleast *someone* thinks this is crazy. I can understand being upset at the loss of pets, but my God, the bear is only doing what is natural to it.
The 'natural' thing is to protect what you have left, not invite in more trouble. Once the smell from chickens, etc is in the air, you are going to attract predators, and your dog was just...yes...stupid. But, still, I am sorry at the loss of him. There are tranquilizers, etc...but why kill it?
Ugh...

I don't think Panner is baiting a bear, he just seems to live in a bear infested area. He is just trying to survive and keep his livestock safe.

Several years ago, we had a couple of nice wet years followed by some very dry years. In the wet years, the bear population exploded, and when the dry years came along, we had fires and the bears were virtually driven into town looking for food and water.

Sometimes bad things happen in nature. Now, the question is whether Panner gets the bear, or the bear gets Panner.

Let's see how the story unfolds.

I think (hope) will I win, at least I have in the past. Many people have e-mailed me to put photos up of the area, I would love to only I am not smart enough to figure out how to. So here is a link that will show you the area around me house, cacreeks.com/aner-nlo I live between the view upstream from the put-in bridge and the lunch stop belos Ponderosa Way bridge. Rufus is right about the fires. The last big one here was stopped at my property line. Still the biggest problem is the people moving in from the city. They just throw their trash out and never clean the bar-b-que. Plus the do gooders don't want a bear season to cull the bears. Just this year we had four sows with twins and one with triplets. Having lived here for over twenty years and up until the last five only lost a hand full of chickens to bear. Three years ago I lost thirty five in one night. That is when I put the electric fence up. Since then my loses are way down. As for living with the bears and lions are other predators, they are far less dangerous than some of those living in the city. I know the bears are doing whar comes natural to them, but we have people taking food out into the forest to feed them.
This does more harm than good. The bears forget how to feed themselves in the wild. Before long some child will take the place of my chickens, then let them feed the bears. Even in national parks they tell you not to feed the bears. Unless I fall asleep on the deck I will get this one too.

Panner I know you are getting some bad judgement from some about this. Go on and get that bear before he graduates from livestock and dogs to children.

Hey once the food in the barn/shed is gone its gona be checking out the house. It can smell potatoe chips on the outside of an unopened bag. Our homes just aren't that bear proof these days.

Good luck and straight shooting Panner
