Day 18 Lockdown Questions

how far has it gotten around the egg? since its only been this morning you can wait till tomorrow and see what happens then. the babies chirping encourages the others to pip when they may not be ready just yet. if it hasnt hatched by then you could consider helping

It's probably half-way around the egg (maybe only 1/3 of the way). It's not moving or but it's breathing regularly and steadily.

I wouldn't even know how to help if I needed to! I'm guessing I'd have to keep it moist with a wet paper towel or something and gently peel the shell away from the membrane? I have no idea. Hopefully the little guy will do it on his own!

I wouldn't help it either way. It may be hard to see the chick die in the egg, but there was a reason why. The chick may be too weak to survive, and if you do help it out there is a very good chance it wouldn't survive anyway. I've helped out 4 chicks in the first year I hatched eggs. 1 coturnix quail, 2 bobwhite quail, and a ring necked pheasant. The coturnix quail made it all the way around, but missed a piece of the membrane which was just thick enough to prevent her from getting out. So I helped her, she lived for 2 years and four months. Both of the bobwhites I helped out passed away within the first 2 weeks, and the pheasant died as soon as it came out of the shell. So I would suggest not helping either way because it could cause some extreme pain and suffering to the chick if you accidentally hit a blood vessel, or cause it to die from weakness later on.

i have helped a lot of chicks hatch and some do die but just as many live and in your situation with it being zipped i am about 90% it would be ok to help . but like i said i would wait till morning. is your humidity still good?when they are that far along it doesnt take much to finish. but if you havent done it before you need someone standing by that has.

The humidity is fine as is the temp. I have no one that can help (no one nearby is experienced).

This is a HUGE learning process for me and I'm learning as I go. I feel pretty fortunate to have as successful of a hatch rate as I have already given everyone said to expect much less.

I'll just keep an eye on the little thing.

If I was to (hypothetically) intervene (say, tomorrow afternoon or evening if no other progress has been made) how would you suggest I do so safely?

I may of just did it wrong. If you decide to help the chick, there are videos on youtube on helping them out that could help you. Cute chicks too, I have 36 fertile eggs from my flock in the incubator now due the 15th. Can't wait!

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to check out YouTube. Waiting is always the hardest part!!!!! Good luck with your hatch!!

a lot of people dont belive in helping them out same reasons you expressed but some dont consider the fact that its our fault. ie: not the right humidity, low temps. ect.. and theres nothing wrong with the chick. maybe we had it turned wrong and it cant hatch its still a health chick. so i try. i dont think you did anything wrong

I personally feel that if I have ordered shipped eggs... and incubated them artificially... then I have already interfered to such an extent, not helping them hatch would be senseless (to me)

here is information on how/when to help:

i read your hatching guide today which i loved , btw, and the dry method it tells me to do everything completely opposite then the styrofoam instructions do. i have had bad hatch rate and would like to try dry but i have already started wet?
