Take a pair of tweezers and break off little bits of shell, working your way around the egg, as the chick would zip normally. Be careful not to damage the inner membrane (covering the chick) at this stage. Once you've got a bit cleared, take a wet Q-tip and wipe the inner membrane. Check for any visible, active blood vessels. If you can see any active vessels in the membrane the chick needs more time, so wrap the chick in some damp paper towels to help keep the membrane from drying out and leave it for another 2 hours before continuing. Before I let the chick out I clear the shell covering the chick's belly area and check the membrane there for signs of blood or yolk as well. I nearly got caught out once when the rest of the membrane was clear and that last bit of vessels hasn't retracted yet. Once that bit is clear you can remove enough of the inner membrane to allow the chick to stretch and free itself. Good luck!
