So far I have had what I believe to be a successful hatch from shipped eggs. 11 of my 12 eggs made it to lockdown (the 12th showed no signs of even being fertile). 9 of the 11 have hatched. Number 10 pipped but then this morning I noticed I couldn’t see it breathing anymore like I could the day before and it’s beak was sticking out of the she’ll making no effort at all. I decided to check if it truly was dead and sure enough the umbilical cord was wrapped around the chicks wings and leg and wrapped tightly around its body and it looks like the chick wasn’t able to absorb all of the yolk sac. My other problem lies with egg number 11, it has not pipped at all from what I can tell, it is a slightly larger egg than the rest. I’m wondering if I should give it one more full day or count it as a loss?

Welcome to BYC! :frow

The umbilical cord is only the yolk.. sounds like maybe the membrane was what's known as shrink wrapped??

With them being shipped eggs OR if I was a new hatch-er.. I'd definitely wait another day to see what happens (in case there are cool spots in the bator that haven't been adjusted for). When you say hasn't pipped at all.. you mean externally or did you also candle to see if there was an internal pip? I would start by candling first, and go from there. Do NOT "water candle"!

What color are these eggs.. if not super dark you may be able to tell if the veins are still active.

Since you were brave enough to do an egg-topsy.. see my favorite hatching resource, Possible cause for embryo failure according to what day they quit and the clues seen starts around page 50..

Sounds like it *may* have been specific to only one or two eggs.. which *could* be nutritional or other (health) deficiency caused by only a single hen in the group that maybe needs more than the others, isn't absorbing nutrients as well, or something to that effect.

Congrats, that sounds like a very successful hatch! :celebrate

Pics (and breed description) required! ;) :pop

It’s a hybrid from the hatchery but this is all you can see with candling could be a beak poking through the air sac at the bottom?

I will say the air cell is substantially smaller in the above pic than it was when I candled this specific egg before lockdown
