DE Powder and deworming

I use DE for dewormer for all my animals & it DOES work. I sprinkle it in food.

I used DE (food grade) with my chickens for a couple of years in their food (I used a "Shaker" and mixed it at 2%-- about a teaspoon per cup of feed).

I also used DE about the run, in nest boxes, dust holes. During the time of DE use is the ONLY time my flock EVER got northern fowl mite. It does not work in getting rid of mites. Since I stopped using DE, I have not had any mites!

As a de-wormer, INHO, the science behind it does not make common sense to me. Others have told me that their flocks got worms when they were using DE. Personally, I have never had a worm problem, not before I used DE, during my use of DE and not since I stopped using DE (2 years ago)-- still NO WORMS & NO DE!

IMHO, DE is all HYPE! No Harm. no benefit, just a waste of $$$$!

Please do not rely on it as a heartworm preventative for dogs IF you reside in an area prone to heartworms AS THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR DOG(S) and costly to you.

I saw on one of the de websites that it will kill all kinds of insects including fireants. I sprinkled some on a pile this morning. The site said within 2 days the insects should die, so we'll see. I'll let you know the results of my experiment.

One of these DE retailers makes a form designed for fire ants. It is intended to be injected about 2' down into the nest. Supposedly it prevents fire ants from regrouping there, besides killing them. Have not tried it.

I have killed fire ant mounds with DE, but it does not cut down on the number of reformed mounds as well as Amdro does, in my experience. When I got some fire ants building new little hills near my coop where the chickens walk, I used DE, and they have not returned to that area; I just used regular old Codex DE and sprinkled it on the ground and nests.

My chickens free range; out in the yard, they avoid Amdro treated mounds.

Here's some info....it has "potential" as preventative in laying hens....

The results of this study indicate the DE has the potential to be an effective treatment to help control parasites and improve production of organically raised, free-range layer hens.

And a PDF on a trial in use on goats, cattle, etc...

Search university research on various websites....they all agree it will give chickens extra calcium and therefore stronger bones.. .but does not kill internal parasites.
