Dead Chicks IN THE MAIL

Twice last year it took 3 days (Express!) for my chicks to get from Ohio to TN. They fell off the map after being scanned in Ohio- both times. It was late spring & early summer, and I had some DOAs. Still ended up driving 1 1/2 hours to get them.

I'm praying this year will be different- they aren't shipping until end of April. I really wish we were closer to a big airport like Nashville- they don't seem to use Chattanooga much.

That seems to be the biggest factor.

On the other hand- if I send out priority mail (with no little lives at stake)- it gets to Ohio in 2 days.

I ordered m flock in August and still lost one so I don't think the weather was the issue with my doa. I think some chicks are just not as robust as ohers and don't make the trip. My order was shipped Monday evening and was at the PO WED morning and I picked them up before noon that WED.

As I've said, I'm six hours away from Ideal. It still took 3 days for my chicks to get to me last time I ordered. Location helps, but it's a gamble where the chicks will have to go before they arrive at your post office. Sometimes they take the scenic route.
On the other side of the coin, I won't order in mid to late summer either. It's way too hot here then. Don't want to cook the little boogers. Springtime turns out to be just right; not too hot, not too cold.

Ever see the bottom of those boxes that come into the feed store? those chicks get mailed as well. I was watching a person put the chicks in a brooder last spring and there were plenty of dead chicks in the boxes from which she was stocking.

It is early. It is cold. It is a risk.
And I personally think the USPS does a pretty darn good job of getting these guys to us in the mail.

I love to go to my feed store on Thursdays, the day the get their chicks, thousands of peeping fluff balls. I've seen the boxes they come in when they are mailed and the holes on the sides. I can see the chicks. Never have actually seen any dead ones and don't want to. I do envy the person who has the job taking care of the chicks.

It's so weird b/c I think I have gotten them within 24 hours every time. That's TX to NC.

My regional post office called today, all my chicks arrived dead there last night. They wanted permission to dispose of them. i never even seen the box

I had them arrive within 24 hours once, the rest of the orders arrived in 36-48 hours. But, you are on the other side of the state.

The weird thing is, my express birds did not make it to my home office within 24 hours and that was FL to NC. Go figure!
