Dead Chicks IN THE MAIL

I said the same thing on another thread and almost got my head handed to me.

I live six hours away from Ideal. I'm still waiting for spring to order my chicks.

Losing precious little chicks like that is horrible. I only buy my chicks at a well known feed store that has been in business for over fifty years or I make my own chicks with the help of a broody hen.

I ordered baby chicks in March of last year and had 100 mortality because of the cold. The order in April was 100 living because it was much warmer. Just cuz you've got spring fever doesn't mean the babies can survive.

I'm sorry about your babies. I had a problem last week with hatching eggs. They took 4 days to arrive. They came from GA. They weren't even scanned at one of the post offices.

None were broken though.

But I recieved eggs today from VA and they came in 2 days! But 2 were broken.

Maybe it has something to do with GA post offices?

Ever see the bottom of those boxes that come into the feed store? those chicks get mailed as well. I was watching a person put the chicks in a brooder last spring and there were plenty of dead chicks in the boxes from which she was stocking.

It is early. It is cold. It is a risk.
And I personally think the USPS does a pretty darn good job of getting these guys to us in the mail.

Yep, the only difference between having them shipped directly from the hatchery to you or picking them out at the feed store instead is that with the feed store you don't have to see the dead ones in the box for yourself.
There's a reason you see more baby animals in the spring. It's the right time for them to be born.

I completely agree

The USPS does a great job... I ordered chicks from Ideal last year. They were shipped out on Wed and del'v by 10:30am on Thursday and I live in Indy. Thats great service in my opinion. I'm doing the same this year, I also am fully aware of the risks.

The reason why I like to order from the feedstore is becouse you are guarenteed live chicks, unlike when they ship them to you and you end u haveing 5 of them dead.My feedstore even lets me pick my own chicks out from the brooders so I can pick out the healthiest and cutest and friendliest ones

I've said it too....people just need to be willing to wait and they aren't willing to do that. They think because the hatcheries are selling it's ok.

LOL Gritsar. If I lived 6 hours from a hatchery, I think I'd just drive to go and get them. Hmmm...now that I think about it, its probably a good thing I don't have a hatchery within driving distance - it would be much too tempting...
