I bet the predator made initial contact with rooster in coop or got him shortly after he came out. If other birds still using coop then latter scenario likely which you already suggested. Owl will hunt after dawn when sky overcast or under cover of trees. Hawk might go after chicken in morning but if you are in Michigan then light levels will be low early in the morning.
