i believe we are legal to shoot them here in NY.. Oct - Feb for hunting, and some odd dates too for trapping.. my hubby is trying to get a bead on them, but when they say sly as a fox.. yup!
@rookhomestead you said male urine, i assume you meant dog urine? cuz my hubby would go pee in the woods if i ask him.. [i snorted out loud,. hehe]

My ol man pees everywhere around here, but I think he drinks too much water for it to have a lasting effect, maybe try it anyway. But yes, I was referring to the dog. I believe Fox, coyote, wolf, and dog share lots of genetics, so it seems legit that a dog "marking" would deter them. But again, in early early spring, they will take a chance to feed the kits. Coyotes get braver and stupider then too. We hear them carry on howling not too far away, but they never pass a certain tree line. We have 5 dogs, sometimes more, depending on if someone abandons one like they usually do every 6 months, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. After the attack by the Fox, I joked that if everyone owned chickens, the shelters would be empty (I don't like outside dogs but it was tempting to have one on each side of the fence.)
