December Hatch-A-Long!

They'll be just fine by themselves. I even put older chicks in with newly hatched chicks in my incubator so they have someone to keep them company while they're drying off. But I'm able to open my incubator without the humidity dropping more than a few points. They gently peck the newly hatched chicks once or twice, to figure out what/who they are, then they fall asleep next to the other chick until I go to take them out once the new chick is dried off.

If they're in there by themselves, they tend to get very noisy. But then again, I have my incubator right next to my bed and the brooder not two feet from that.

This golden one was just hatched this morning.

These first seven I left all together and let them peck at each other's pips to help each other hatch until they were all dried off.

OMG THE CUTENESS!!! OK thanks, I'll take a look at them at 4:45, the last chance I have before it's locked up for the night and make the call then. Glad to hear that the one shouldn't necessarily eat the other :O

Do you use a home made incubator?

Nope, no thermostat. I have a heater that I adjust every once in a blue moon, according to the three thermometers I have in the incubator. It stays consistent, and I'm usually home most of the time, so I just poke my head in every few hours or so to make sure everything is still good.

Hey there I am one week into my lavender favorelle, blue laced red wyandote, lavender orpington incubation. The eggs were pretty cold when they arrived and when I candled many did not have anything, very porous. Some were question marks and a few were carrying embryos wiggling around. I have no idea how this hatch will go and I am so excited and hope a lot hatch for me, my last batch were in the process of hatching and I went in the other room for a minute and came back and my hunting dog had them for lunch, I will never look at her the same or get over it. I have weights on top and dogs are off limits unless I am in bedroom with them. Hope to at least get a few of each kind to add to my flock. Hope all you other hatchers are having as much fun as me I love watching them grow and hatch.

Oh no! I would have been devastated. I also have a hunting dog and I am always eye balling her when she walks by my bator. She would do the same exact thing then probably bring one to me and say "where's my treat?". Lol
Good luck with the new hatch! =)

darn dogs, my one fav I had removed because she hatched so early is named lucky because she is survivor and 3 lemon cuckoo orp eggs who were up high on turner and didn't get consumed. All mine left is a few pieces of eggshell.

I'm so sorry that's awful!!

Well chick #2 is really struggling to get out. Pretty sure it's shrink wrapped. I did a little assisting but stopped as I just wasn't sure if it was ready. I took out some shell and membrane in the air cell area and am hoping that it will do the rest when it's ready. Take a look at this photo, is this normal?
