December hatch-along

@cree57i Thanks for the advice. There's a "cooling period" after day 7? I didn't know that the target temperature changed at all throughout the whole hatch.

Ah I think I see what you mean, the cooling period during the short time you spend candling?

Some of the more advanced incubators actually have a cooling option of 1-2 hours daily. After the first week, a cooling period has been shown to increase the hatch by a bit. There is a study on one of the numerous BYC incubation pages which shows it can increase your hatch by 1-2 chicks. Some of the much more learned folks on this thread probably know where to find the study.

I don't stress about letting the eggs cool when candling. I do stress about moving them around too much before day 7 though. Candling in the incubator works best for clumsy me!

Our December babies
Shipped eggs: 8/16, although I only ordered 12, so it could either be figured as a 50% hatch rate (glass half empty) or 75% (glass half full!). Our own babies were 100%.
Eee! Exciting, look at the little cuties!

Very interesting about the cooling. The same hold true for quail? My eggs tend to cool a bit as I turn and refill the water wells and candle(if I do it, this is only my second time incubating, and my first time candling!), perhaps I should try and have this happen instead of trying to minimize.

I candled all the Cotunixes that are set to hatch Wednesday thru Fri(two different set dates) as I was putting them on the floor for lockdown.... ALL 12 ARE SOLID DARK(except air). Oh man I am so excited. First time hatching Coturnixes, and my first time hatching eggs from my flock. Also have Button eggs to hatch Wednesday, but my Buttons lay purple eggs so I can't candle(restating info for the newcomers, and also because I'M SO DARN EXCITED hee hee).

I have some due in 3 days or so, some due around the 14th and some I just set today as christmas chicks

Sweetheart, been there done that too! Started hatching yrs. ago..got hooked, had to try this that and another thing. I can't keep them all. I have sold many to try another breed here and there. I've decided I love my egg layers. Have to have a pretty egg in there..so I go for the blues or the Olive Green..getting a real pretty OE right now. I am a for real back yard chicken keeper..that's why I can't have all of the breeds I want. I love love the silkies. The winter gets harsh here, so, I hatch them at this time, have them for the spring and summer out there, then sell them. Yes,makes me sad. I just don't want to go through with what happened yrs. ago when I tried keeping Seramas through the winter. We won't talk about that. :/ I also love the Bantam Cochin. Do the same, have them for a while along with the layers in the spring and summer. I am usually over my limit in the summer, I let them free range when it's warm. I can't help myself..I love the little bantams! But want those eggs! Right now I do have one girl on the smaller side. She did well through last winter, so kept her. I call her Uggums because she was soooooo ugly while she was growing up. She's kinda cute now. Maybe it's because I love her.

She is a smooth..SG. Anyway, have hatched ducks..no geese. Not enough room for them. I just wanted to try hatching them, also hatched some Button Quail...so Cute!
Here is a photo of my Uggums. She's gone broody twice now, and has been a great mom. :)

My Olive Egg right now..

The girl that lays it...note..no green to her legs at all! Dad was an EE,
mom was a RSL..oh yes! I know who is who. I can keep a roo
for a short time, until it decides to crow too much. :)

Did I say I love silkies?????

I didn't realize there was a December hatch along! I've got 41 eggs set to hatch this month, 17 on the 9th, 8 on the 12th, 12 on the 14th and 6 on the 21st. Luckily all but 6 are scheduled to be moved to the hatcher by the 11th, so new years chicks can be set too! This is so fun! I've turned into a total "hatchaholic". Luckily my hubby is "chicken crazy" too, thank you Jesus, so our bator/hatcher is almost always occupied. Lol! Incubating "Christmas style"
