December hatch along

I have 2 broodies going!
Some background: all are indoors until the outdoor coop can be secured. We are only there on weekends and Wednesday eves. (in the process of moving there)

1. So we got to the new place on Nov 10th and our Buff Orp, Buffy, is brooding. (approx. 7 mos old) Problem: no rooster. She lives with a female Ameracauna and a female silkie. I removed the eggs from under her (Buffy)which were hers and Millie's since they were not fertile. Then, I took the eggs from the Seramas (Keanu is a roo and they have been mating.) and placed them under Buffy. I did that Nov 10 & 11. There's about 8 eggs. We saw some veining the last time we candled. Some not at all. Wednesday we will remove any eggs not showing any development.

2. Fast forward to this weekend. Lo and behold, I checked in on the Seramas and Kiki is brooding. (4 3/4 months old) So, I took the eggs scattered around Saturday and Sunday (some were from Dumpling) and gave them to her. She is sitting on 6 eggs. It's all she can do to cover them with her small stature.

At this point I guess I shouldn't add any more to either since they will be too far apart in hatching dates. I wonder if I should move any eggs from Kiki to Buffy but they are a week apart so probably not a good idea.

Millie insists on squeezing in the same nest box with Buffy to lay her eggs. Thankfully they are blue so easy to find and get out. There is another box directly next to Buffy which the Silkie, Peep, used yesterday. Her first in a long time but Silkies are not great layers. I tried keeping the fake egg in the empty box but to no avail.

I'm using Nov 10th as a start date for the 1st for Buffy's clatch and Nov 17th for Kiki's. Adding 20 days will give a target of November 30th for Buffy and December 7th for Kiki.

There all Serama eggs (2 different sizes under both hens. Kiki lays smaller eggs than Dumpling). Buffy is a large Buff Orp. It's going to be so cute to see her with really small chicks. I hope she doesn't crush them. I think the wood piece separating the two boxes may come apart. I don't remember. If it does I may remove it when hatch time comes to give her more room.

I'm hoping to get even a couple of chicks. Both hens are on the younger side especially Kiki. (And we are newbies. myself and my DD) We tried hatching shipped eggs in an incubator this summer for a zero hatch (all appeared to be infertile despite the $ it cost to buy and ship them)

Sorry this was so long. Anyone still awake?

Definitly still awake glad to have you hope you have a wonderful hatch keep us updated

Ok, I guess that I'm in for this now. I'm only going to be doing a small hatch this time. I just set 8 of my biggest eggs from my flock. I will keep any pullets that hatch, because I like big eggs! ;) The hatch should be due on Dec. 11th.
Awesome welcome I should have some hatch December 1st,5th,10th staggered hatch

I candled mine tonight. Of the 8 eggs under the buff orp, we saw movement inside 4 of them! I took away the other 4 and as I expected they were not fertile when I opened them.
The Serama is sitting on six. 4 of them are very very doubtful but she is a week behind the buff so I’m leaving those eggs until the weekend. The other 2 eggs have spiders!

So we have a potential for 6 baby Serama chicks. (All the eggs are Seramas.) I know we have a long way yet and I shouldn’t count my chicks before they hatch. I Hate reading about the chicks that make it all the way to pipping and then don’t make it the whole way.

Will we have to worry about the buff hurting Serama chicks when they hatch because of the size difference?

There shouldn’t be anything at all to worry about they are gentle with all babies no matter their size
