December hatch along

This morning I went to check on the Serama mama and she was off the nest eating. I looked in the nest and what do I see but 8 eggs! Dumpling must have squeezed herself in the box with Kiki and laid 2 more there. Thankfully I had numbered the original eggs. Do I leave these new ones or remove them? They are about 4 or 5 days behind the others. Normally Dumpling lays all over the place.

So we got to the new house today and I went to check the Broodies. I lifted the buff orp up to get the larger hens infertile eggs out since they are still insisting on laying more eggs in with the buff. Guess what else we found:

I only put the eggs under her Nov 10th. Today should have been around day 14. The other 3 eggs, when candled look like pictures of day 13 eggs. Those eggs all have movement in them. So what should I do? I have her brooding in a nest box that is in a small coop in the house. I have closed the doors so that the other two hens can’t get in since there is now a chick there. I will put food and water in there. Will she stop sitting now that she has a chick?

What kind of eggs are you setting?
Well i got my second set of eggs set this morning did a quick candling of the eggs that have been there for 5 days and only three were developing so i pulled the other five and i opened them up and not a single one of them were fertilized a little disappointed but it is the risk you run when you order eggs this late in the season and shipped eggs also. But on a good note i have three developing for the first hatch and the second hatch is on day 0 so you will see candling pictures Saturday for the first three and then thanksgiving for the second set and as soon as i get the third set in i will let everyone here know when those will be in progress

So where did this little cutie come from

It is a Serama chick. I have 2 Serama hens and a roo. When the buff orp went broody I gave her some Serama eggs since the Serama wasn’t broody at that time. The eggs were laid all over the place so I didn’t expect that any one of them would have started to develop until I put them under Buffy. That must not be true since the egg that hatched was further along. I labeled it “dark” when we candled them on wed nite. I thought it was a bad one and almost removed it. The other 3 showed veining.

The remaining 3 look like they have several more days left. I had a target of Nov 30th
