4 out of the shells, more pipping. Tonight I should start seeing a good number of them out of the shell. The Dorking's come out rather small, the large ones are the BCM X Pro Reds. They didn't come out the color I expected and one even came out Red with chipmunk stripes. Going to have a blast figuring which is which lol. The Dorkings will have 5 toes. The ones that get big fast will the Dorking X Red Rangers. Dot on head = Cuckoo Marans. RSL and BCM/ProRed may have some issues telling them apart since the BCM/PR are coming out in a different color and pattern for each chick.

So here’s all my 4 mamas and daddy(not pictured is my white bird who laid dark brown eggs, just one of her eggs, she was culled)

Left to right
Dark blue: Anna, ameraucana ?? Mix she has a small single comb with a beard and lays large gray eggs. 4 eggs in bator
Lighter blue : Kurt , she lays green eggs, I think she’s just amaraucana 2 eggs
Black n white: Michael, she has a horn comb a beard and a small crest I think she’s an amaraucana Houdan lays Tiffany blue eggs 4 eggs
Buff: Goldie, my oldest. She’s a buff Orpington, lays light brown almost pink eggs 2 eggs
Daddy is a ?? Maybe a jersey giants Marans cross he’s large and in charge

The rest are mystery moms with a CCLB daddy so those will be fun. One blue green egg and the rest medium brown.

I’m really curious to how thes EE will come out. Just backyard mixes, but I’m hoping for something cool.

Anyone with genetic background have ideas? The genetic calculator is tricky

Just weighed the chicks from last weeks hatch. All but one have doubled in size, and the one that hasn't is pretty close.

The largest one (a cockerel) who was several ounces heavier than his hatch mates is still proportionately larger than the others. I'm never surprised by how fast they grow, but sometimes you look at them every day and don't realize just how much they've truly grown.

Sometimes I believe they haven't grown much in a month until I hatch out more eggs and see the difference.

7 Chicks in the incubator, I stopped taking pictures because I can only get a few chicks at a time and don't even know which ones are the new ones... Brooder pictures tomorrow night when they escape the Incubator to their first real home.

Yes I want to try different heritage breeds with my meat birds crossings. Just to see how well each Heritage breed does, the added advantage of less feathers from seeing your crossings has me believing that I might have a a good candidate with naked necks. Not exactly sure where my meat projects are going, I am really just trying to make a giant compost pile and figured why not fiddle around with breeding and see if I stumble across something that works out. My "Day Job" is Evergreen hedging tree production and Chickens do not eat ever greens so they weed my nursery, scratch up leaves and other materials, and add lovely Nitrogen pellets to the high carbon compostables I collect so I can fill nursery pots.

There is a Beautiful White Naked Neck rooster for sale ($5) just a couple counties away on craigslist. I am trying to decide if I am prepared to take on another rooster. He looked big and healthy in the picture too. Son of a show bird supposedly so he may have a good pedigree.

You should grab him while you have the chance. The white one's are harder to find.
