December hatch along

Due to a neighbors kid being a Quadriplegic I must have a secure pen and coop open for a rooster. I can take no chances of a rooster getting out if there is a defenseless child in a wheelchair out in the yard.

8 Chicks in the Incubator, still pips and zipper pipping going on. Unfortunately for my meat hybrid projects none of my Dorking X Red Rangers are pipping. Last time I had 3 and only one hatched. All Developed nicely though.

(Edit Addition, and right after I say none of my meat birds have pipped, one pips! and I uploaded the Naked Neck photo from Craigslist since the link will be a dead link in the future for those who go through archives)

I looked at him in your link. He look's good! I wouldn't be letting him get away from me! His neck look's even cleaner than my current roo's. ;)

I'll have to sit out the January hatch-along... next planned setting here will be end of February. Pretty sure what I have in there is going to hatch ok and my pens will be plenty full for winter. Last year the hatches were so bad I could barely fill the pens and the only difference over the year prior was a change in incubators. Hopefully we're back on track!

Once the girls are all back to laying I'll need to sort through them. I need to find the Legbar who's consistently putting out a misshapen egg, the 2 BCM pullets putting out too light eggs and any not looking as correct as they should. Gotta make way for the next series of keeper pullets!

24 hatched, in the brooder, some still pipping but after I cleared the brooder of eggshells and chicks it as 84 degrees and 49% humidity. I hatch in an unheated room so likely I shrink-wrapped the remaining pipped eggs and will likely need to hand hatch them. I have gotten good at that. I will take pictures soon, my body needs a rest from doing my outdoor morning chores. So glad I built that larger brooder, these guys will outgrow the indoor brooder by next week.

Condensation on the inside window got dusted a bit when I took the lid off off the incubator to remove chicks. Best photo I can do with the remaining. I will likely need to assist in hatching. If they are not zippered in the next 4 hours I will zipper pip the ones already pipped with my finger all the way around the egg and place it back in for the chicks to bust out. Sometimes you get a chick with half the egg shell stuck to it. Poor things, but thats what you get for being late to the party! Some of the pips were face down likely from hatched chicks rolling them around. I tried to get all pips to be face up.
