December hatch along

The only thing that I can say to that is that you'll never know until you try it. If you don't like the results, then don't do it again? :gig
A few years ago I was working on similar crosses and it looked promising but I didn’t get to see the finished product because my step moms dog killed my chicks they were about 12 weeks and they were looking really good so I didn’t get to find out

I have had Leghorns in the past before i had roosters. I receive some again in February. I honestly find them to be the best breed. Eat so little, free range so well, and are the best layers I ever had although they slow down when it gets cold. They lay well in winter when it's warm. The negatives is that they never go broody which is a positive to most people. Not very meaty but they sure grow fast so crossing them with larger birds might actually make for a great meat bird in a few generations if a skilled breeder can get the rapid growth on a large frame.

How're everyone's eggs doing? Here's my progress so far:
This is what a Buff Orp mom with a Serama baby looks like!

3 eggs left to go but they look like they need a lot more time.

I might be having another December Hatch along, Dorking Hen was still on her nest when I closed the coops. She does take a long time to lay and didn't sit in the nest until 2 hours before sundown. As much as I like broody hens I do not like the idea of a mama hen with a brood in December and January. I will likely try to only have my Meat Hybrid eggs under her because they get big and feather faster. The good news is that if she is broody then i can stick some of the meat hybrid incubator chicks under since I started it yesterday and they will likely hatch about the same time...

The Current Meat Hybrid is Silver Grey Dorking x Red Ranger.

(morning came with just an egg in he nest box and no broody mama)

This chick was a surprise. I was figuring on nov 30 to Dec 2nd for this hatch. They didn’t go under the broody until nov 10th and 11th.

However the Serama broody hatch shouldn’t happen until around Dec 5 th or so since she got them around Nov 16th. She’s actually one of the 2 moms who all the eggs belong to.

Apparently that one egg had been in the incubation process somehow before you found it to put under her.
