Deep puncture wound became a nasty hole of gunk.

Amoxicillin dosage for chickens is a bit different depending on the source you look at. It varies from 20mg per Kg (each 2.2 pounds) to 50mg per Kg daily. That is about 10 mg to 25mg per pound daily. It is good to divide the dose into half in the morning and half in the evening to get a steady blood level. I would either give 125 mg or 250 mg twice a day for 5-7 days.

After looking up dosages, the dosage of amoxicillin is 57 mg per pound twice a day. For a 5 pound chicken, give at least 250 mg twice a day.

Amoxicillin is generally well tolerated. It can cause GI upset, but that is usually with really high doses or with prolonged use. It has a lower risk of toxicity issues than many of the other antibiotics. When using amoxicillin I've had no problems really. Glad one is looking better, fingers crossed for you.

I tried to get a picture of Chickadee's wound. She's... Not happy. I'd say she's part feral, and scared to death of being poked. I got one of Woof, who's pretty much looking the same (more furry, though)

We're making progress on both counts! Chickadee has no swelling or puss at all. She seems to be responding creepily fast. Woof is happy that he gets tuna. Chickadee I just mix it in whatever we're going to feed her and hope for the best.

This is what they both look like today. Chickadee's is less oozy and smaller.

(Ignore the fur. I've been too busy keeping chickadee and the neighbor going to clip it)

Oh it’s looking good. She’s got to feel better just having the pus out.

Oh good! I was kind of worried where it filled up so quickly. I thought the wound should be open for longer.
This is Woof on Day One, four hours after finding the pus. Tiny picture, but you can see how it's a crater size. It turned an angry red shortly after. Chickadee was about the same.

Honestly I'm finding this whole thing a blessing. There's NO WAY I could have taken my cat to the vet, and the cat forums weren't helping. When I found Chickadee was the same way it finally clicked. I should ask you all, since a lot of you don't have chicken vets nearby! And it's been a great way to bond with my neighbor kid. He's now excited for my chicken eggs hatching and wants to help. His parents made me cookies as well.

Bonus, Chickadee is on better feed, has a mirror, and I set up a small 'hut' for her with stuff they happened to have. The chicken will be happier when I stop insisting on holding her, Woof is thrilled he gets canned cat food, my neighbor kid has made a new 'grown up friend' and wants to play with me, his parents are happy for a free babysitter, and I'm happy everyone else is happy.

I'm sure this happened for a reason. I just *happened* to have medication I could give them both. Small blessings!

Fantastic!!!! So glad everything is working out so far. Stay the course <3 keep up the great work and please keep us posted too. I love happy endings!!! :jumpy

On a bit of a side note*** Doesn't it feel great to be able to resolve these serious issues without being at the mercy of some rude, expensive, minimal vet? FREEDOM!!!! I personally am so tired of being held hostage by their bureaucracy. Most of our vets are fairly terrible anyways and our Ag ext... PWAHHH! no help. Thank goodness for BYC and and it's caring and experienced animal loving peeps. Bravo!!!
