Deep puncture wound became a nasty hole of gunk.

@Abriana , I see our posts overlapped.
I wasn’t trying to one up you on the number of times a day the wound should/could be tended to.
More often is always good.
I just usually recommend twice because for most people, it’s all they can fit into their busy schedules and twice daily is much better than not at all!
Oh that's no problem! :thumbsup

Funnily enough, I have both amoxicillin and another type of antibiotic hanging around. They gave me amox for a UTI, which I don't respond to. I have the other one that I just picked up today. I know I shouldn't.... But I don't want either of them suffering.

I'll get started on wound care tonight. You all have NO idea how grateful I am. The no judgement or the fact that it's also a furry feline. As well as all the fantastic advice, of course!! I'll keep everyone updated.

Furry or feathered, I'll help them all it seems!

Now to go gag at smells....

Tie a bandanna over your face! Wear gloves. Good luck :fl

Amoxicillin dosage for chickens is a bit different depending on the source you look at. It varies from 20mg per Kg (each 2.2 pounds) to 50mg per Kg daily. That is about 10 mg to 25mg per pound daily. It is good to divide the dose into half in the morning and half in the evening to get a steady blood level. I would either give 125 mg or 250 mg twice a day for 5-7 days.

If you are dealing with a UTI, it is always best to get a urine culture, but most usual ones respond to Bactrim. Some docs still prescribe macrobid, but it may not treat the bacteria.

I’d use a hooked nose syringe. No needle. I got bit by a cat full on my hand deep. It hurt I cleaned it. Next morning I woke up my hand was swollen 4x’s normal it was grey in color. Went to the hospital the doctor ordered X-rays. I said come on Doc I got bit it’s not broken. He told me if I had even a hairline fracture and the saliva/bacteria goes in my bones they’d have to amputate. I started laughing. The look on his face told me he wasn’t joking. Scared the wee-little crapOla’s outta Me!

The bacteria in cat's mouths that is most dire is Pasteurella multocida. Most recommendations I can find are for penicillin intramuscularly injected, or a sulfa antibiotic. So if you don't see any improvement with the amoxicillin I would switch to one of those options. Penicillin G Procaine is available at most Tractor Supply stores, and feed stores ( https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/durvet-penicillin-injectable-500cc?rfk=1), you can get bird sulfa here (there are other sources also) : https://www.allivet.com/p-8021-bird...MI4buvrIjx3wIVj6_ICh3BNgU9EAYYASABEgJdMfD_BwE
Here is one article with some info, pasturella starts on page 961 and transmission by cats is discussed on page 962: http://avianmedicine.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/33.pdf
Best of luck!!

Oh yes, we did all that fun stuff! We had to go with cheap since I currently don't have insurance, but I respond well to what they gave me. I forget what I'm on now.

Holy cow! I've had cats my entire life. They're... uh, not friendly. (Rescues with issues) I've been bitten right on my wrist joint down to the bone, bitten on my arm down to the bone (on a vein!) scratched so many times it's a wonder people don't I need to be committed, been bitten more, and have *NEVER* had an infected wound. I had one that was sort of kind of maybe infected for a day, then it went away. To hear how serious they can be is scary!

I hopped next door when the neighbor came home and took care of the chicken. She's NOT a happy girl, and tried to bite me a few dozen times. (Bird bites HURT). I decided to use it as a teaching tool and showed him how to wrap the bird, and how to clean the wound. Also got in a bit of explaining about why these things happen. The chicken doesn't see her future self as a model, sadly. With the wound cleaned out it looks less angry. Still red and sore, though. I'll go back over in the morning and repeat. If nothing else, it seems to be soothing my neighbor.

Kitty Cat is next to get The Treatment. :)

I gave Chickadee (we named her!) some antibiotics last night, and wow! She's not as tired this morning. Her wound is less swollen as well. I can't flush it out as the there's a clear/reddish goo filling the hole. She's too sore to go digging in. I washed it again this morning the best I could, applied more medication, and gave her treats.
Woodinadore (Woof-in-A-door, don't ask) is lagging behind her in treatment. I guess Woof got the bigger bite.

I'm hopful that Chickadee will make a full recovery thanks to y'all, and I may save a vet trip for Woof in the process!

I borrowed more traps for the feral today. I'm going to ask a few neighbors if I can set them up. We will catch him yet.
