Hello! I have a lovely 12ish week old pullet, Sophie, that I got about 6 weeks ago. She is a Delaware x White Leghorn from a gal who wanted to see what that cross would be like. Sophie has 3 brothers from the same mom and dad and I recently was talking to the girl I got her from and she's surprised by how different Sophie looks. She joked that she wondered if the father was a different Roo but she guarantees that the father was a Delaware (which doesn't matter to me, I love Sophie, she's a sweetheart but chicken genetics are fascinating). So here are pictures she sent me of Sophie's relatives and then recent ones of her:

Sophie and one of her brothers around 6 weeks old when I got her. As you can see she's almost all white with black spots, but the white is a bit tan or something.

Another angle of her at that time with 2 of 3 brothers in the picture.

This is the brothers currently. Two look like a Delaware and the other one on the right looks like a leghorn.

And now this is Sophie:

She's still molting but the darker striped feathers are what's new. I think she's a mash up of the parents but the gal said it's weird since those aren't what a typical Delaware feather stripe looks like.

Now I know genetics isn't as simple as 2+2 but if anyone can add insight onto her new pattern or how to even describe it that would be awesome! And if not, I'm just excited to have a place to post this and discuss hehe!
Thank you,
Emily & Sophie :)

Edit: lol jk the girl I got her from said she just found out the dad is not a Delaware. He's something that has white boys and red girls crossed with a blue egg layer. Maybe.

That's a nice looking bird. Sometimes it's the mystery ones which turn out to be the friendliest from my experience. I like something a bit unique!

Oh my gosh you have no idea!! I worried she wouldn't be nice since I didn't get to socialize her the way I did with the one I hatched but she's an angel!! She always sits on my shoulder when I go sit in the coop with them for a bit. I'm a bit bummed I have an order of standard breed chicks for next month since I've discovered my love of the mix mysteries.

I've just hatched 9 mixed breed chicks. I'm looking forward to see what sort of colouration they have. Always exciting!
What breeds have you ordered?

Too many, lol! Let's see, blue polish, ancona, lavender orpington, blue andalusian, golden laced wyandotte, speckled sussex, silver spangled hamburg, and a few marans. I like the fun looking ones. Though if my mystery EE with a cushion comb really is a boy maybe I'll let someone go broody and see what they create LOL
What breeds did you mix?!

We hatched some cross breed chicks and it's amazing the variety of colours and patterns that we've ended up with. I can't wait to see how they look when they molt into their adult feathers (they are 7 weeks old at the moment).

Sophie is gorgeous! 🥰

I seriously think after my next bunch arrive I will only get some fun crosses or surprises from then on! It really is incredible to see how they change! And thank you, I got the email notification for this comment earlier while I was in the coop with them and I told her you said she's gorgeous. She just made a little honking sound but I think it was a "thank you" ;)

Very adorable and also interesting coloring ! I have a Delaware among my gals & the black is a tell tale sign , but your Sophie definitely looks like a “throwback“ from another generation :)
