Well doesn't that just stink!!!:barnie

I got Delawares from a small hatchery about 2 years ago, and I sold them off last year. The cockerels were slightly more meaty than my hatchery Orps/New Hampshires, but nothing to write home about. I also didn't like the personalities of the hens. They were pushy, bossy and bitey if you didn't dispense treats quick enough. Of course, I never searched out heritage stock.

In October '17 I got I trio of show quality Dark Cornish. I LOVE how they are formed. They are slow growing if you want weight, but you can get a nice 3-4lb carcass with a lot of meat off of a 3.5 month old cockerel.

I debated trying the dark Cornish for meat birds.

I have done Deleware birds for meat. They were good birds fairly hardy and were ready to process between 18 to 24 weeks. The issue I had with them living in a super cold climate where we regularly get to -20 in the winter was that with the large single comb they tended to get frostbite and not do as well in the colder temps. I started with stock from eggs I got online through ebay so they were larger birds. The hens were much smaller though and didn't lay very well at all. I turned from them towards other breeds that were better layers and foragers with larger hens as well as roos. The ones I have been using were Orpingtons usually okay to process by about 18 weeks but a much larger bird in general hen and roo in my opinion. So far I have been very pleased with them. Hens lay well go broody and raise babies in the summer and I keep the larger hens and roos to add back to the flock.

So far at roughly 8 weeks I am pleased with the size of the Delawares that I have. Both the Corkerel and hens are similar in size. They were hatched along with a Black Jersey Giant and all very close to same size. Sorry no weights to report. I will post weights in the future. Very friendly birds once they see me they come running to the fence.
