Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

Loved the update! I, too, have been dealing with bumblefoot woes. A hen I took in from a friend who wanted to start fresh with all this year's pullets of course developed bumblefoot in both feet a month after I took her. One foot was an easy fix, but her other one has been a nightmare. I went in from the bottom and no kernels. All the swelling was on top, so I knew that was where the bumble was but I was reluctant to cut through live tissue. Ouch! So I've been waiting for a scab to appear up top and as of yesterday morning one is forming, so later today will probably surgery day. Again. Ugh. At least it's just the one girl. I can't imagine ALL my birds getting it at once!

So glad to hear that Derp and the gang is doing well! We have had very similar weather in Massachusetts, a very very wet June, and of course we had just untarped the roof of the run, so I too had a bear of a time trying to keep things dry in the run. Swamp-ish comes to mind......500 lbs of sand later has helped, but the girls were damp for days at a time. We just returned from a 10 day vacation and then a 3 day road trip w/ my son to go look at a college in Virginia. The girls had the basics taken care of,(cleaning, food, water) but no real health checks. Well just today I noticed one if my Welsummers has a huge bumble in her foot, swelling btwn her toes and all. Oh joy! This is beyond the soaking in the koi solution( which I do have) I will have to deal with the surgery I'm sure with this one. My fav also has had her beard plucked, and she is molting something fierce right now. She looks quite pathetic. Poor Honey! I also swear she is deaf, when I call the girls in for treats, she's always last to come running, I swear its a visual cue for her and not an audible cue she responds to. Has anyone ever heard of a deaf chicken? She isn't a hatchery bird either,I got her from the local breeder, as an egg.
Anyways, enough rambling about my girls, thanks Jenn for the update on Derp & friends!

Beautiful pictures, love beardless Derp, glad they are doing better now. I never heard of the comb fungus before, is useful to know.

Fenced my veg this year, last year I had so much damage from stuff getting dug up when they were using the nice soft dirt for their baths!

artsyrobin, I have to look around - my memory is like a sieve but I can probably narrow it down to about 6 threads. If I could recall the breed, I'd know where I read it.

EUREKA I have found it. Artsyrobin -

Happy Chooks (moderator) "My psycho Orp broody is off the nest now during the day. She is busy picking up food and clucking to her non-existent chicks."

I did tell her about Derp and her invisible chicks. I don't think either hen is psycho - just march to the beat of a different drummer. Yeah, that's the story

Oh it is in Stella's Social Club page 895 - post 8941 top of page.

Thanks- my jewel was a survivor of a dog attack, when i got her she was paralyzed, she never laid eggs consistantly, but was sure she had!

meanwhile, this guy doesn't have a name yet, the only boy in the hatch- amazing!

these favs are amazing birds- i do think they process things different than other chickens
