Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

I found this page, which is just along the lines of what I was hoping for. Posts specializing in pet Seramas, instead of strictly high quality or breeders!

This is perfect, as the videos I've seen from one semi-local breeder seems like her birds are skittish and scared of hands, and that they are kept as breeders. Which is perfectly okay, but not what I am personally seeking. I am thinking it might be worth it to ship when it warms up...

I've also read mixed things about vaccinating Serama chicks for Marek's. Apparently it's extremely hard to do because of their tiny size when they are freshly hatched (remember that the vaccine is most effective when administered before 36 hours out of the egg). I've also read that Seramas seem to be less prone to Marek's than other breeds. Perhaps it will be worth the risk?

So, what is best? A single loved pet, a pair? Should it be two hens, or a hen and rooster? I don't plan on breeding, but want them to be happy.

Hi Nambroth, I will be messaging you tomorrow (as its 12AM) . This FB page was set up by Jerry Schexnayder, the original importer of the serama for the explicit purpose of helping the non-show quality seramas find homes and NOT the knife. :love

I messaged you Nambroth and to answer your question/s, must have 2 birds, either 2 girls or a pair, which ever your heart falls in love with when you go to see them. Having a pair is more fun as their is SO much more interaction between them. Serama boyz are DA BOMB!
And ALL high powered breeders have pet quality, every single one...:clap :love

I know all breeders have pet stock they want/need to place but, aren't a lot of seramas cage raised - sometimes outdoors in decent climates. The show stuff will be trained for cage and table top I suppose. But do the pets get socialized at all?

Seramas were originally bred to be pets so their tractability is inside of them from the get-go....I have picked-up seramas to come live with me and they come out of the cage UNHANDLED and they will sit on my lap on the drive home, by the time we get home they are my best buddy. SERIOUS, this is what is SO SPECIAL about them... :love :cd :yesss:

p.s. there is no "training" to pose, it is either in them from the time they hatch or it is not there......
Example: this roo is 100% serama, no amount of prodding will EVER get him to pose
700

Here is another roo (both are mine) and he was hatched this way...no training needed....
700

See the difference? The only thing you can train, is to get them excited on the table and get them to hold the pose for at least 90 seconds :D

I just need to see what the Fud Guy wants to do... he cares for the animals equally and has a say. He really wants a pet dove, and I want a Serama. We'll see! Can't have both... our house is only so large and we already have a few parrots. I want to be careful, especially since every new feathery face means a financial responsibility too!
