Desperaux

Have not read the book but I am taking my two grandsons to see the movie at 10:00. I think we need to stop by the book store and get a copy so we can read it after seeing the movie.

I am doing a mini-highjack of this thread. I have a 5 year old grandson who taught himself how to read around the time he turned 4. He is reading on a mid first grade level and his teacher does support his abilities and encourages him. Yesterday after seeing the movie which the kids loved I mentioned getting the book. Well he did not want that book but wanted another chapter book. I told him he could pick one out. Which in where lies the problem. He wanted a chapter book no less than an inch thick. We never found one so I am still looking. I am thinking it could be on a 2nd grade level. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Susan

The original and complete "Tale of Despereaux" is actually a pretty thick book--it has 52 chapters. Maybe he saw the "kiddie" version of the book and was turned off?

Try the Captain Underpants series--my nephew and my daughter both loved those, and read them at about that age.

My daughter also enjoys the Magic Treehouse series. The first "serious" chapter books she read was the Little House series.

Hi Susan,
Desperaux is on a 5th grade reading level....it's was a lot for my 3rd grader. I would suggest the Biscuit book series for beginning readers...Junie B Jones or Ready Freddie books make excellent first chapter books in addition to the Magic Tree House Books mentioned eariler.

I just bid on some Magic Treehouse books on ebay. Hopefully if he has a stack of them it will count. I have no idea why he has decided he wants a thick chapter book. I was going to get Tale of Despereaux to read aloud to them. He wanted a chapter book to read on his own. I appreciate everyones suggestions and will also look for some of the other titles.

I have been needing to get the Junie B. Jones books!

Actually, the "Biscuit" books were my daughter's very first books that she read all by herself--she loved them! That was two years ago, though, so we're always on the lookout for more.

What's tricky is that my daughter's reading level is way beyond what she finds interesting at her actual AGE. Despereaux was a huge hit with her, and so was "Coraline," in a BIG way. But it can be scary, so be aware of that. Here are my daughter's Goodreads reviews of Coraline and Despereaux .
