Dewlap Toulouse Hatched! Last Photos 6/30..I promise!

OK...I have Baby #1 (thank God). But, I haven't read much about the "umbilical cord"? It appears to be dragging behind him as he walks around. Is this normal? He just hatched about 5-10 minutes ago. HELP, PLEASE!

Usually it will dry up in a matter of an hour or so. The problem with letting him drag it around is that it can open up the navel area and the intestines can slip out. If he keeps dragging it, I'd take some thread and double it. Then tie the navel cord off near his abdomen, making sure you don't catch the abdomen itself. Tie 3-4 knots, then clip the thread and the navel cord off.

Be sure to scrub your hands well before you do it to keep from introducing bacteria.

THANK YOU!!! It disconnected by itself, but I am so new that I don't know what it is and am concerned that this is something that should have been absorbed in the chick and was not. After three days of labor, I'm a bit punchy and DETERMINED to will this baby to live.

Great...it's always best if you don't have to intervene...(Did I just say that??? The master of intervening??) I guess it's just the 'save the world' nurse in me.
