I wonder WHO could have sent me them!

I'm not sure. Perhaps red bacteria?

Oz, do you have any ideas?

It was a clearly a blood ring, but the egg wasn't fertile and never began developing.

That would be alot of bacteria. Tho I have one in my group that has a bed ring. I may cull it later just to see what there is to see

This isn't my picture, but the egg looked similar to this:

Picture from http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu/avian/pfs32.htm
coch it says on that site "The lack of any visible embryo structure indicates that it is a BWE." with that bloodring

I am still under the impression that blood cannot be formed unless there isa viable embryo at some stage of development. keep researching and inform.

That's what I thought too, but the yolk was still in tact and I saw the ovum. There wasn't any development.

I hope I don't sound crazy... I should have taken pictures.

The egg in question was from my pair of blacks. Out of about 30 eggs, none were fertile.

When I candled on day 3, I saw the ring and I thought that I finally had an embryo from them. By day 4, it was obvious that it was just a blood ring. The ring grew larger on days 5 and 6. I then removed the egg to examine it's contents.

I've cracked open 2 blood rings in my short hatching experience and both had rings attached to the membrane but no visible development and a ruptured yolk.
