Thank you, I'll have a look. We have a lady at our local bookshop that is very good at locating even old books that we want. I can ask her to find me a copy. She loves us as we've been VERY good customers. LOL

I have another dying, lost a second last night so this is the third is currently being doctored with sugar water in a little basket on hand warmers. This one isn't as far gone as we found the other two ( DH checked at midnight and found that one fully gone).

She is still peeping, if weakly. She can't stand and doesn't want to open her eyes but she has tried both once or twice.

how old are these chicks? Did you hatch them from your eggs? Are your birds healthy? What do the droppings look like? Have you posted this question on the emergencies and illness thread?

they are 5 day old chicks from mcmurray. I posted here because the last time I posted in emergency I didn't get any responce.

Did they get really cold when they were shipped to you?

My first thought is that they were too cold. 2nd would be that the parent and/or incubating conditions were not healthy and they picked up a bacterial infection. Have you contacted the hatchery?

It was cold, maybe lows in the 30 or high 20s. There were 27 in the box and none were DOA so I didn't think the got stuck out in the cold....

Sorry. It is really hard to say what is wrong with a chick. Since they were shipped to you I would think the cold shipping probably is causing the problems.
