Quote: yes there is too much fluid in there, I dont think you will have an early hatch 3D with air cells like that. you may see a big difference in air cells running it low until tomorrow eve. you sure temps are running 102 no less?

What's the best thermometer/hygrometer ?

the best kind would be a probe that you drop down in the bator. I have yet to get one but it is on my list. I have heard the reptile ones are dead on accurate. I think you asked how I put my thermometer in the bator with my turner. I lay it on its side next to the wall and I left the three egg holes around it open. While I like the turner for a lot of eggs I think I like the control I have with hand turning. I am also convinced that my chicks hatch out better from hand turned hatches than auto turner hatches.

Quote: there are links in the hatching 101 article in the humidity section it depends on what kind. Believe it or not I calibrated my acurites with oral thermometers (old school ones) in ice water and then put water jar in the bator with the thermometer and all three are spot on. I tried those green cheap fish tank ones from walmart, the floater ones, those read way low compared to the acurites so I threw them in a box somewhere. I also have found the one cheapo incubator thermometer that came with my brand styro is spot on too. but its since worn out and got dirty because its just stapled on paper and on a thin pc plastic. Farm innovators is that brand.

What if one hatches early? What does a small air cell do to a hatching chick? Drown them?

Don't lock down yet. Run your bator dry for a day to increase the cells then lock down tomorrow night. It is possible for a chick to hatch from an egg with a too small air cell but to have the best chance you want to have big air cells. Think of it like a target. The bigger the target the easier to hit. The smaller the target the harder to hit but not impossible.

Incase anyone didnt know, brief cooling of the eggs out of the bator (10-20 minutes) can help drawn down an aircell as well. We do this daily with goose eggs since they are thicker shells and need it all the way through. I have done it with chicken eggs that just werent growing the air cell quick enough at the end.

I had to check the brand thermometer I use and it is acurite as well. Love them. They didn't even need calibration. I did check for accuracy with room temp and the household thermostat. I bought my 2nd halfway thru an incubation and just put it in with the other for a few hours and they read the same. They keep track of high/low readings so I can easily see any changes.

Good info. I would not have thought about cooling the egg.
