Incase anyone didnt know, brief cooling of the eggs out of the bator (10-20 minutes) can help drawn down an aircell as well. We do this daily with goose eggs since they are thicker shells and need it all the way through. I have done it with chicken eggs that just werent growing the air cell quick enough at the end.

I have been following this thread as a lurker for a few days. I'm praying for the babies!!!

This is my first hatch and I'm on Day 10. I just candled and can see 11 out of 17 eggs (these were shipped eggs from Montana to FL-I'm impressed) are still developing. The others are dark eggs so no looking inside. My question is how do I know if the eggs is bad/about to explode/etc? Will it start smelling when I sniff it? I know it will after it explodes ;) but I want to prevent it from getting to that point.

Hi Kaybee!! I have not had one explode yet, and I KNOW I shouldnt have said that! sniff test is all you can rely on then and if it stinks chuck it! dark eggs and green blue eggs are the worst to candle later on too. How are your air cells doing? on track?

They dipped eggs in nothing, sterile water and two different strengths of sterile water with vit C for 2 minutes. the dipped eggs were cooled to 24C (75.2F) for 6 hours.

The eggs were kept at 24 C for a total of 6 hours

Fertile eggs cooled at 24˚C for 6 hrs at the 16th day of incubation decreased embryonic mortality compared with those non cooled
Mortality rates -
16.34% no cooling
14.85% cooling in sterile water
11.07% cooling in sterile water with 5% ascorbic acid
12.77% cooling in sterile water with 10% ascorbic acid
The most significant mortality reduction was with the 5% vitamin C solution.
Also noted, exposing eggs to cooling during incubation increased the time of hatch compared to control. Also, the whole incubation period in hours was significantly (p< 0.01) affected by cooling eggs during late incubation where the whole incubation period of cooled eggs for 6 hrs at 24˚C at the 16th day of incubation was 509.12 hrs while that of non-cooled ones was 500.67 hrs.
The increase in hatchability % suggests that, cooling reduced the metabolic rate of embryos during the latter part of incubation and relieved stress caused by excessive production of metabolic heat.


Those findings suggest that the improvement of hatchability percentage may be due to the decreasing of embryonic mortality where ascorbic acid may be regarded as an anti-stress agent


Interesting article - we need more data before we start dropping eggs in our orange juice though.
 
Air cells have some side saddling but also have good tops. I've got my eggs in cartons with big ends up and I am turning twice a day.

My eggs are a mixture of blue, green, olive and chocolate! I can't wait to see what mixture I get, there are supposed to be a couple of pure Wheaten Ameraucanas and they seem to be developing well! :)

But listen to me, counting my chickens before they hatch!!!! ;). I'll just sit back and learn then hope for some sweet chicks in the nxt 11-13 days! My 9 year old son is loving this. As we candled, he asked if he was swimming in my belly like that. I told him "yep, doing somersaults I'm sure!". ;)
 
Cooling alone seems to increase hatchability by 1 chick in every 65 chicks you hatch.

Honestly, I don't think that's enough to start a whole new technique when some of us need to concentrate so much more on temp stability and such.

Lets get the basics right before we start tweaking.
