The kids and I went out to count how many pullets and how many cockerels we have in the NYD hatch coop. There was a cockerel in there that was hatched in November. He moved in with them when they were still in the big brooder in the barn because he didn't get along with his brothers anymore, so we just let him stay. Out of 17 chickens in that coop, 4 of them are cockerels... Not too bad...

Then we noticed this on the back end of some of the pullets..

Is this from the cockerels? The coop is pretty small for 4 of them to be in there and even though they are all young, the 4 1/2 month old's brother is definitely covering my hens... I took the older one and one other one out of the coop and temporarily relocated them to the back of my horse trailer.... I have nowhere else to put them. Pretty sure they are going to be going into a stew pot... The older one is kind of mean... I left my ameracauna cockerel and a gorgeous EE cockerel in there... I think I'll have to try to rehome the EE...

I've heard to only hand turn eggs an odd amount of times. What happens if I accidentally turn them an even amount of times one day?
nothing!!!

the reason you turn an odd number of times is because at night when you sleep, or during the day when you are at work, there will be a period that the eggs are on the side longer. the odd number of times ensures you dont leave them on that side every time.

good luck

Man they are working them girls over I would get all of the cock birds out for a while and give them a break

Having a very slow hatch. I have life in every egg I candle. I have had two more chicks just hatch. Today is day 21 and 22. I like the 20 day hatch a lot better than this one.

Hey Everyone!! It's been a horribly busy weekend. I have been home to sleep, and that's it, LOL! I wanted to pop on though and congratulate Sally for getting through yesterday. I know it had to have been hard, but you did good, girl!!!

How long will they continue to hatch? Through how many days? I don't understand it. My Temps were good on both bators the last two weeks for sure and I think it was good most of the time. One bator was a still air and the other one was forced air. I have all the remaining eggs in the forced air.

On another note. im having trouble getting the temps regulated in the soda pop machine. its cold on the bottom. I moved the bulbs to the bottom but the fan is still at the top. This seems to have leveled the temps out from top to bottom. Im not in a hurry so I will continue to experiment.

It must be late. I'm talking to myself again.

I am in and out. Did you add additional fans or just the one at the top. Getting heat down to the bottom of a tall bator is an issue. Are the bulbs going to be protected if at the bottom. A drop of leaking egg on a 300w bulb will make a nice little explosion.

Another option is to run a 3 inch pipe with elbows from top to bottom and use a 12V 80mm case fan to force hot air to the bottom.
