Quote: Chickens get coccidia by ingesting oocysts, which are immature coccidia that are passed in fecal matter. These oocysts can contaminate feed, litter and soil and survive for a year in the environment. They get spread by (amongst other things) shoes, clothing, poultry equipment, wild birds, rats and of course, already infected chickens.

So, even if your barn hasn't been the perfect environment for an outbreak (wet), it may have been introduced in one of the ways listed above. You may have been in contact with it unknowingly and introduced it to your flock?

Doug have you looked into your chicks mouths? they are normal? just an afterthought.....

I hope they get better soon!

Chicks..... NPIP said closed flock or netted runs in our state, is this so in yours? what about concrete floors in the coops and runs mandatory? I swear I will have a heartattack soon with all this. I am down to less than 40 birds and I will send some more away soon.

Congrats on the hatches!

I agree, if the broody is full of nonsense break her. I don't give my broodies any chances, if they mess up, it's over.
She is in the broody breaker. All chicks are fine except the one I just had to cull that was completely not normal. My other hen is doing great. She might not like me much later when I sell half of her chicks.

Closed flock is just that you can't bring birds in from any other flock unless they are NPIP. I Think. Inclosed run seems a little silly if they free range at all. Cement floors is a little tough if you have little wood coops. I am wondering if they make up all these rules so that small flock owners won't mess with testing. My one big coop does not have cement floors. Wasn't an issue. I'm rambling.

It's not coccidiosis. I can send one off to the state for $150 bucks. What else do I treat for. I'm getting ready to mix probiotic, vet rx, electrolytes and pour the medicated feed to them. I have another dead one.
