We've had a rough week or so on this thread with our chicks and chickens, so I thought it would be nice to all share something positive.

Tell me about the personality of your best or favorite hen, roo or chick?

Mine is an almost 3 month old EE pullet named Lily. She just presents as a delicate lady and is a constant companion to my same aged Blue Wheaten roo. They hatched together and are inseparable. Every night they roost I watch Lily try and sometime succeed in getting her head under the roe's wing. She looks like a big chick peeking out from under a broody hen's wing. . The roo tolerates it. Interestingly, she was hatched from a bator not a broody hen. She is a very sweet girl that I hope to get green or blue eggs from in a few months. <3

Well. 4 more when I got home. Several more sick. Birds will reach the lab tomorrow. At this point, I'm hoping to just save my flock. I may have to take some drastic measures.

has it spread to other pens or does it remain isolated in the one group?

Just one group. Unfortunately it held 60 something chicks when this started. To big for brooder. To small for outdoors.

I had some very expensive chicks in this pen from shipped eggs. I've had chickens most of my life and this has never happened to me. I've not had any in a few years but just got back into it this year.

Doug this sucks for you. If you ever come thru this area I will gladly give you eggs. It is almost to the point with your pen that maybe culling them all and starting fresh might be best. I would be so worried about them spreading whatever this is to the other birds.

I'm new to this too but if what you are giving them doesn't work soon, I have to agree with chickensooner. ;(. I can't imagine.

The difference between hen raised chicks and brooder raised...The little guys are 3.5 weeks or so. The big awkward teenager looking ones are 3.5 months old. The little guys go right to the top and snuggle against whichever bird they are closest to. The teenagers are still trying to figure the whole roosting thing out and a couple still prefer the ground. Oh and the teenagers will do anything to keep the little ones happy so the hen won't peck them. The dynamics of the chicken flock are fun to watch.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't have eggs, but I have lots of chicks. If it wasn't so hot I would send you some. What breeds were in that pen?

In better news....
One of the chickens I'm raising for my parents laid her first egg today. It's the little white one, from Pearl, the White Leghorn. They didn't want to deal with chicks, so I have them until they are ready to integrate they into their flock. I ate it for dinner.

It says "Infection from other carrier birds (from their respiratory dischages), including wild birds. Through hatching eggs. From infected dust / bedding material. Chickens and Turkeys can cross infect one another."

I guess the chicks you hatch can bring it with them, from the hen that laid the egg.
