I candled the eggs today (day 11) and I removed the obvious dead ones. Out of 20 I have 3 definite survivors and 1 that I'm pretty sure is dead but my son swears it moved & is developing faster than the others. I promised him I would post the pic and ask for your opinions.

I don't see veins but it looks like an exploding egg in the making. :-/. Sorry!

Hey All!

Sorry I've been MIA lately. Life has pulled me away from the computer for a bit, but I need some advice, so if anyone has any ideas, please share. I have a BLRW pullet that started laying eggs this month. The first egg had the thinnest shell ever and broke when I picked it up. The rest of her eggs, I've never seen because "someone" keeps eating them. I assume from the thin shell they're breaking easily in the box. Today, I finally got one that doesn't have a thin shell, but is saturated in calcium??? Her eggs are supposed to be light tan, and as you can see it's caked with clumpy white. She's on layer feed. Any ideas?

If she's only been laying for a short time it's possible she's still sorting out the kinks in her ovaries. Calcium deposits and calcium coated eggs are usually caused by excess calcium in the hen's diet and in some cases defective shell glands. Watch her for awhile and if she continues laying eggs like this, cut back on the layer feed for awhile.

I would say dead it looks really weird. does it stink? candle again and see if you see it move but I still say dead. I don't see veining

Ok so I checked the air sack and marked them its day 10 almost but they look like they are sapposed to and we saw movement in some so I'm very excited about that yay couldn't really see into the blue shells enuff to make out much but the air sacks looked good there to here's hopping I get some fuzzy butts soon ill post pics soon also if I turn them so the rounded end with the air sack in it is upside down during candling won't that hurt the chick been carefulll not to do that

A hen is a lot rougher on her eggs when she is scratching and moving them around

I like the two day treatment. Ive been treating for an eternity it seems. I noticed a hen with a runny nose this morning when I was feeding. All the chicks and chickens are feeding and drinking like crazy. I have some with fluffed feathers but they went after the feed with gusto and a few of them have had fluffed feathers for a few days now.
