I started up the incubator last night. Temperature is a perfect 99.5 degrees. Right now it's running dry at 6%, but I'm going to add some water to bring it to 20%.

I've got 9 silver laced cochin bantam, 7 black cochin bantam, and 1 call duck egg going in today. I'll set another batch next Friday.

I have a couple of months that one or two chickens die on me. They are OK and suddenly die over night. My flock has grown and now I have polish that I don't want to loose. The thing is that I have been complaining about two roosters that comes from a neighbor but can't get them away. My flock don't free range but I still feel that they should be kept away. The thing is that today I saw one laying around and when I checked him it has running nose. So time to worry. What can I do to prevent more deaths. I know I have a problem. Just not how big

Okay so this is my chicken school. I will need a diploma when I hatch 100%. Don't ignore me . I'm talking to my teachers in hatching. I want something signed to put on my wall.

How on earth do you know that a hen is going broody? I went to collect my daily eggs and she was sitting there. Usually I can collect and she would come out and as I leave she carry on her business. Today she kinda pecked me, but then came out. As I feed every one she went right back and was sleeping in the nest.

Quote: 100% Hatch I will personally MAIL you a certificate Dolfi!!

A broody? OMG I have a story how funny since this from last night!! HA HA HA Oh Dolfi! you will know after a day or two she will allways be fluffed on a nest! You will throw them (gently mind you) out of the nest and every time you go back to the coop she will be sitting there again all flat and some even squauk at ya and fluff up.... some crack me up, even if I set them out of the nest on the ground they will sit on the ground in the assumed position and not budge a muscle, some will chatter up a storm and wonder for a moment but later on they are in the nest box again! (wonder what they are really saying with all that chatter? ) muwahahhahhaaaa

Best way to get a broody is NOT WANTING one! ha ha ha

Story of last night when hubs was so kind to close up the chickens and grab me eggs cause I am sick........

Hubs returns inside out of breath: "I think we have a sick hen"

Me in a panic: "why? whats wrong?"

Hubs in a sad voice: "She is in the coop all fluffed and sick, its my favorite hen too <curse word> the black tailed one"

Me in a sad pathetic voice: "Hun, is she in a nesting box?"

Hubs in a sad voice: "yea, she just sits there and looks at me and I know something isnt right, should I remove her?"

Me almost cracking through to laughter: "No, but you could give her a few eggs to sit on if she is broody"

oh no dolfi, I would start a thread in the emergency section...

oz I am sure can make some suggestions for respiratory but you need to separate any sick and be extremely careful to keep bio-secure around your little chicks/ young chicks.

Have any of the birds ever been vaccinated if so for what?

If you have lost alot you should send for testing or at least have blood draw done. If that freaks you out, you can attempt treatment and prevention and start with basics and start treatment as oz suggests.

I started one. Only one person and the answer was to get a vet.go figure. So I called around no one wants chickens lol.but finally one said he will call me back. Said he might have to come over to treat them. $ $ $ that I don't have. Let's see what they say when they call me back.

Shopping list for chicken drugs

Amprolium (corid) - for coccidiosis
VetRx - colds, croup, scaly legs and a de-stresser
Oxytetracyclin (Agrimycin) for resp illnesses
Sulfamethoxine (Dimethox) for just about anything and my "go to first" drug - including coccidiosis and resp infections

I have only had to give one treatment of dimethox when a chicken developed a runny nose. stopped symptoms instantly

bactim or septra is sulfamethoxine - often used in humans for UTI. pet shops sell it for fish tanks. you could open capsules and disolve in water

Oxytetracyclin (Agrimycin) for resp illnesses
Sulfamethoxine (Dimethox) for just about anything and my "go to first" drug - including coccidiosis and resp infections

I have way too many bookmarks to find stuff efficiently I am sorry!!! but this is one
