Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Thank you. That's helpful! As of this morning 9 have hatched, several more external pipped. Appears that at least 4 other them have the sticky goo on them. Wonder if that's bc I didn't get the humidity up enough in the first few days of hatch. How soon can I pull the chicks to wash them?
Lots of great info in this post & in hatching 101 and the assist article. Thank you!!

Empty shells - a valuable source of information

Quote:
At days 11 - 12 of incubation, the chorio-allantoic membrane reaches the sharp end of the egg. If the albumen sac is too large due to insufficient weight loss, this membrane cannot reach the sharp end and will not be closed. Insufficent weight loss is typically caused either by too low a temperature or over high humidity. Observe whether or not the chorio-allantoic membrane is closed by looking inside the bottom part of the empty shells. If there was overheating during the last days in the setter or in the hatcher, excessively thick and clearly visible blood vessels will be observed.

 Navel strings

1. high humidity in the hatcher. The
umbilical blood vessel does not dry
down and fall off normally
1. Review hatcher humidity profiles

Early embryo deaths may be associated with a deficiency of vitamin A (failure to develop circulatory system), vitamin E (circulatory failure), biotin, niacin, pantothenic acid, copper, selenium or thiamin. Excess boron or molybdenum could increase the proportion of early deaths.

Mid-term embryo deaths have been associated with a deficiency of vitamin B12, riboflavin, phosphorus and zinc.

Mid to late deaths have been associated with a deficiency of vitamin B12, niacin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid and riboflavin

Late embryo deaths have been associated with deficiencies of vitamin B12, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, folic acid, biotin, calcium, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iodine and thiamin. Excess selenium could increase the proportion of late deaths.

Excess iodine and vitamin D can cause high embryo losses.

if they dont dry you can pull them anytime just dont get water in nostriles (nares) dry with papertowl and put back in the bator to dry

I checked all other eggs,

all were in a thick albumen yet, all too wet, one that had life is nasty gooey brown and I think bacterial cause it had a smell, it was not absorbed, it was in complete nasty liquid, I culled it. It also was a black duck

Too high humidity and bacterial, this is the one that had those spots starting in the egg I video taped.

So I have a yellow hatched, one almost done absorbing and very active in a cup, and another in a cup that was so big it couldnt flip its head to pip, so I assisted and released his head and cleared his nares and put in a cup as well, he is breathing well and making those short pip movements, so this is a good sign. I have found if you assist and the chick is fast breathing it will pass.

All other eggs nasty fluid filled and dead in shell, all black....

This is what the very fluid filled, small air cell eggs looked like that never had draw down....

This was the one that was alive that I culled... nasty, I still cant believe it was alive!
and note the veining is absent except for a few spots on the top like I showed in the video a few days ago?
the poor thing was dying for days and days good grief!

So guess what!

I upped the sandpaper and did some sanding on the next batch of eggs! we also weighed them, DH is home today so he helped me.

SOOO I have a possible three ducks in the bator, time will tell.

Day 11 next batch, Air cells are all over the place :( Eggs in the bator, sanded with 150 in lines, the smaller the air cell the more lines, only going to a lighter color deep. basically scratched in places.

After reading about humidity and weight loss in the first 11-12 days... this...
Quote: See the 2nd chick just hatched, look at the bottom of the egg shell, it doesnt near go to bottom.

I think I am too late in sanding them harder!! ughhhhh as I take it, weight loss is important during the first part despite overall loss. DOHHHHH I knew this but didnt know how much effect my initial sanding would do. now I know, sand with reg paper right off the bat.
