Paint, my satin hen just hatched her first clutch! 21 days and all 6 eggs made it to hatch (whew). It was an eye opening and nerve wracking experience, but at the end of it she brought six adorable chicks to the world!

Pre-chicks 😂

They won’t have names until I decide to keep one (or six), so for now they will go by their egg number. This is not some kind of dystopian chicken keeping practice, I promise 😬

Here they are!

And...poor chickie number 2 who took a long time hatching. She hatched 12 hours ago with a swollen looking belly, and is still not quite fluffy. She has a lot of fight in her though, so I hope she makes it :fl

last but not least.. chickie number 6! She was the largest egg in the clutch, and pipped the wrong end, but thankfully came out none the worse for wear :)

Cute! My chicks are due to hatch in 4 days! And my broody hen is sitting on five eggs hatching on the 26th. I hope they all make it. They are so cute!

Good luck number 2!

2 days old - First outing

Momma was excited to finally be able to poop. Whew was it stinky! I’m glad that will be the last broody poop for a good long while :D

Chickie two was too young to keep up, so I held her while mommy tried to teach (without much success) the rest to eat clover. Curious kitten watched from a respectable distance.

:lau:lol: Well...I guess so! Thanks, I do hope all hatch! Sadly one egg broke a few days into the hatch....and it was fertile, I don’t even think my broody hen realized. Hope you get mostly pullets!
I hope so too! A friend of mine has agreed to take all of them, pullets or otherwise, so at least I have a back up plan.

I was so scared of dropping eggs, I still candled everyday anyway 😂

It’s amazing how fast they learn. They can already differentiate food from bedding and pick it out efficiently.

I had fun mixing some quick oats with the pine shavings so momma could “discover” them for the chickies.

So many excited good chow clucks!

I love the little “pot plant” grass I planted in the bedding, i even watered it. lol!

Here is Two, the runt. She’s doing better, slowly getting more energy. Definitely looks much more ragged compared to the others. I’ve been giving her a little bit of electrolyte via a dropper every 2 hours or so. Aside from the feedings, she’s been sleeping under momma the entire time. For the final feeding tonight, I gave her some yolk from one of my orloff’s eggs. I fried the rest for myself, sunny side up, it was delicious :D
