Dickey vs Sportsman incubator

Hahahaha!

Heh ...

Only kidding. For the price, they both look decent. I have the advantage of a well equipped woodshop, so when I want a cabinet incubator, I will build one .... cheaper.

When I do, y'all will get the materials and methods used, they will be better than both the Sportsman or the Dickey, but I do not have the disadvantage of having to build for a commercial market, so I can indulge myself with things like PID controllers.

If I were buying one, I would probably go with Brinsea, but I would certainly be happy with either of the incubators discussed in this thread.

As far as I can see, there really is very little to choose between them. On balance, my *support the little guy* philosophy might, in the end, steer me towards the Dickey.

Here's the spreadsheet I made when deciding for myself. It's a little rough, b/c I lost some stuff in cut and paste and trying to line it up, but here it is. If anyone wants to add to it, feel free.

Both are great incubators, save you some money neither need the full clear door,or the Auto water bucket.

Doesnt hurt to open the door, to fill the pan or check eggs. Temp. recover time very fast.

Really dont need the hatcher, untill you have 2 incubators. One hatcher will take eggs from 3 incubators

What's the deal with the "on-board computer" to monitor all systems that the Sportsman advertises? I'm thinking of upgrading from my two Hova Genesis models, but don't want to put out more money than necessary when I do of course. Far as I can see, this monitoring computer is the only real advantage the Sportsman has over the Dickey. Anybody have thoughts on this to help me decide?

What do you want from the upgrade?

Do you want a bigger incubator, or just a better incubator?

Both the Sportsman and Dickey are large, they hold around 280 chicken eggs. If you want smaller, there are others.

Better. Definitely better. I don't set a ton of eggs, but I'd like to get the best hatch rate possible from those that I do. I tend to fret, and I'd like to feel like the incubator I'm using is working with me, not against me.

Go take a look at the Brinsea Octagon 20EX, and the 40 .... also look at the R-Com.

There is some good stuff out there.

Pretty good spreadsheet. And I would definitely recommend the full acrylic door if you can afford it. It's one of the options I really wanted, and am glad I got.

Paula, this is VERY good information - thank you for sharing. I will let me DH see this as well, since we have pretty much decide to buy new, instead of waiting around for a nice used one to come available. THANKS! HAPPY VALENTINES DAY ALL!!!
