Hatchery red sex links use red over silver, no barring in there.
His father is most likely barred and his mother buff, what particular breeds were used
?
The hens look like production reds or a mix.
Sorry you didn't get what you wanted, that sucks.
If you want nice quality, that is show quality, you have to go with a good breeder. Get to know the breed standard and look at lots of pics of good quality birds. Hatcheries will have purebreeds but they don't always match the breed standard well.
But the flock you have will undoubtedly provide you with lots of eggs and healthy offspring.
One thing that seems to happen a lot when buying from the feed store, people will pick the chicks they want and then mix up the rest. They will just grab one and drop it in with the wrong kind. So, they may have had them separated out correct to begin with and customers messed them up. Good luck getting what you want. They really are pretty though, and that roo is gorgeous!!
The yellow hens look like they could be BO . I think the other posters are correct that he is a mix - Maybe a sexlink Rooster. Try craig's list or put an ad in the local paper. Buff Orps are pretty popular and I'm sure there are probaly people who may have an extra purebred Roo who would like to rehome it. If you are wanting the chicks to lay eggs and or for meat- Your rooster is perfect!! The offspring would probaly be great layers!!
I have decided to keep the rooster and all of my hens. I have 6 buff orps pullets, and 3 red sex-links and 2 mutt hens. The are great layers and are friendly. He is really nice to all of his hens, too. Always calling them over when he finds bugs and such! I am biiding on some buff orp eggs and will raise my own rooster from that batch. I have had other peoples rooster and they are not as nice as one that you raise on your own.
Once the other babies hatch, I will make my pure buff pen and take the rest to the auction to make so feed money with. I may just keep a mutt cage, they are great layers!
Thanks for all of your help in telling me the breed, for all of my chickens.
I think a lot of the problem is not feedstore assistants etc trying to deceive customers, they just often don't know a whole lot about chickens. Also if the hatchery sells them something different than what they ordered, they often won't pick up on it because they only deal with chicks once a year and probably aren't all that interested in them. When they are misinformed, they pass that on to their customers and so it goes.
If I was in charge of say plumbing parts, i'd probably mislead a whole bunch of people too just because it's not something I know anything about or am remotely interested in. We do have one assistant at our local feedstore who knows a lot about poultry, but that is because his father raised birds. Nobody else could tell you more than what's a duckling, what's a chick and what's a gosling. They do all swear up and down you can sex them by picking them up by their head, waterfowl included, but i'm not fighting that losing battle! They mostly see the chicks as a big headache each year.
