The follow button was to replace the buddy feature, everyone on your buddy list got added to your follow list. It really is a cool feature... it makes it much easier to.....well.....follow people!

It would seem less like "stalking" if you had to get permission from the member to "follow" them. If they are a friend or chicken buddy, I'm sure they wouldn't mind.

Random "following" of someone does feel a bit like stalking.

I just read the forum "Logged Out" now. Log in just to reply. Not happy with seeing who's viewing individual threads. Hopefully GFM will lead to more privacy options very soon.

You're right...that is a tad creepy! But quite frankly I don't mind seeing who else is viewing the thread with me.

That way I can reply to them if I want.

I don't think most people would be upset by you following them! It just means "I like your posts and want to read more of what you say!" At least speaking for myself...maybe some people would just be really creeped out. =O

Following was something that could be done on the previous system with different tools. Just because it's been made publicly available is no reason to fear it. Think of it as subscribing if the word following isn't to your taste.

Even without the following feature, I could follow you by going to your profile and clicking on All Posts or Threads Started (both of which were available on the previous platform) and then subscribe to all of your threads. Using the Following function would just save me 5 seconds a day.

Why would you want to follow someone? Because they're your friend...because you find them interesting.

Another moderator (Flockwatcher) has this signature line that I think is appropriate here: "Worry is interest paid on trouble before it falls due."
