Did you insulate your coop?

No insulation in my coop. If your coop is open for good ventilation flow, what good will insulation do with the winter cold? I can see the point of adding insulation to the underside of the roof to help absorb the summertime roof heat if you wanted to(I don't have that either). But other than that, insulation is a waste of time+money in a chicken coop.

I put a thermometer up when I realized we had ice instead of water in the coop one morning, and it was -1! So DH purchased one large roll of insulation, and the next day it was 36 in the coop. I know they do not need to be kept toasty warm, but I felt much better after that $13 investment. And, I don't have to worry about frozen eggs

i put some of that white foam and some extremely hevey duty black tarp on the walls and i have a heat lamp in there and water still will freeze but where i live it can get below 0 real easy so i don't no if you should it depends on where you live

we did - but because of the condensation that could possibly collect inside the walls & roof of our metal shed.

if you do .... I recommend this ...

don't use the fluffy rolls of insulation - use styrofoam sheet insulation instead.

It's easier to work with, hold up, no breathing in the insulation yuck, and rodents don't nest in styrofoam sheets.
I have read that the rodents like the fluffy insulation.

Also before you close in your walls, spread DE or poultry dust in the walls. I spread DE in our walls, and under our floor on top of a plastic liner.

Im firmly a non believer of needing to insulate coops but if i was going to this here makes total sense very good post.

We have 3 coops so far. 2 are fully insulated and one has the roof insulated. we're finishing the new coop insulation as soon as we can. I like them insulated and painted inside and out. If you use white paint it draws in more light for egg laying. My insulated coops stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. I do not have a frostbite or ventilation problem as I have 2 windows in each coop and I haven't closed the pop doors yet this winter. Everyone does what works for them but in happy with the insulation and I think the birds are too.

I did insulate mine because I thought I may eventually use it with chicks. I figured the insulation would hold in heat from a lamp better than none at all. My coop is a 5X8 and I wanted to try to heat it with a heat lap and no brooder box. We'll see if I succeeded if a bit.
