Did you know..... Chat Thread! W/ Hosts: DwayneNLiz, kwhites634, BantyChooks, MotorcycleChick, C

Those were sad stories about the dying chicks at feed stores. I try to stay out of the box feed stores during chick season too!

Sorry about that! We actually saved them from a little mom & pop country feed store, not a big box store. You know its just something chicks do, picking on the weak. Anyway, rest assured that mine had/have long, happy, hug filled, free range lives. In fact, that was years ago & one of them is still here & still laying. She is the longest lived, longest laying, sweetest chicken I've ever had. She's the Dark Brahma in my avatar.

Did you know I gave my kids a job of filling the wheelbarrows full of leaves so I can put them in the chicken coops? The birds like to play in them... and the ducks eat them. It helps keep the chicken coops clean since the ducks go in the chicken coops to find any scraps when the chickens are let out for the day.

Our chickens LOVE leaf piles too. Ours get raked up to go in the greens bin, but if you turn your back on them for more than a second they'll have the piles completely broken down & spread out. Theres nothing like doing the same chore twice.

Do you know how hard it would be to fill a wheelbarrow with leaves here today?

The wheelbarrow would crystalize and crack when the leafs hit it in this cold!

What few leaves happen to blow into my yard I leave for mulch. The soil is alkaline here and pretty sandy, so I leave organic matter in place if it comes to me

And what Ralphie said too. It's cold!

I've always been pleased with my feed store. Chicks always nice and warm, shavings clean, no dead or weak ones, and ducks have clean water...
