Did you know that chickens can learn tricks??

How on earth did you "train" your rooster not to crow??!! I don't have a rooster, but I know that there are a LOT of BYC'ers that would love to have the insight on how they could do that. How did you??

Your Orp pics with your dear daughters are always a big hit. I'm glad the thread was mentioned in the BYC newsletter, so I didn't miss the posting.

My hens will jump for treats , too, and my orp hens are some of the most enthusiastic of the flock. The Orps in particular will give me a little peck on my leg to remind me that they want treats and sometimes they will stand on my feet.

I trained an OEG hen to fly to my shoulder for treats.

I actually trained on of my roosters to crow for treats, but I am sure everyone is more interested in finding out how pooh731 trained the rooster NOT to crow!

Hi,
When I tap the pvc pipe above the waterer 2 of my 3 chickens will scurry over, take a drink of water, and wait for a treat. Over and over. Tap, Drink, Look for the treat. It's pretty funny. One will come when I call her name, too.

I didn't even realize that they were mentioned! I went back to the July newsletter and saw that my swimming chickens were mentioned as well! I feel so honored.

I must say though that I'm not surprised about your Orpington's behavior. They truly are a social friendly bunch aren't they? When we get more hen's next year, we're going to get more Buff Orpington's. We really, really love their wonderful personalities! Also Jill, please check out my blog if you haven't already! Wasn't today a beautiful Michigan day?!

LOL!! Wow! We have four Chinese geese that are like that, they always "argue" for a good reason, just have to look around and see what it is.

And roosters, I've noticed, begin to crow when they see our rescue ex-fighting cock, Shiva. They all crow like crazy and it's not the relaxed occasional singing, they make a sound akin to fire engines at that time.

Keltara, superb photos and I'm going to try that out with our hens too. Especially since they kinda almost prompt that anyway when they come and nudge you for treats.

Chickens were used to teach people operant conditioning. Clicker trainers Bob and Marian Bailey would use them to show trainers their timing. If the trainers clicked too soon, the birds would stop just short of pecking the target, if they clicked too late the birds would stop on the way back up. Google "chicken training camp" to read more.

Ha! That is just precious! We are totally gonna start practicing the chicken jumping. Love it!
