Is there even a difference because I can't really tell. I am trying to decide if I want some of these or not lol

There is a difference in colouring. The Gamble quail have red on their heads. I'm not sure about temperment, I don't have either type, but am hoping to get some Gamble in the future.

Yeah I think the only real difference is that the Gambel I think are native to Arizona and New Mexico and those desert places while I see California quail typically more in Northern California so I guess the temperature tolerance would be different. I like outside of Los Angeles where it can get pretty hot so I just want to make sure what it would be the best one for around here

Gambel's have a red top, California Valley have a blue/black top. both are hands off and flighty. They are offshoots of the same branch, cousins if you will. Both can tolerate the heat and cold well.

Edited to add: If you never have had quail before, these are not beginner type birds. I wish you luck on whatever your choice.

X2

VIRTUALLY THE SAME BIRD IN DIFFERENT COLORS FROM NEXT DOOR NATURAL RANGES

another question then? what would you suggest for a first timer and something that would get along with 2 chickens

2 more chickens.

It is not advisable to keep quail with chickens due to size difference (injury or death) and disease transfer (death of quail). Coturnix quail are great beginner birds and tend to be the least skittish of the quail breeds.

sorry, it's just talked about in about every other thread.

Twocrowsranch said it best.

Here is another analogy, just because a rat terrier and a wolf are both dogs, they shouldn't live together. A parakeet and hawk are both birds, they shouldn't live together. Why, do people want to put quail and chickens living together? Because they're both birds right?

Because both are the prey birds, not birds of prey, and frankly live wildly in the same habitats. That usually means that they will get along fine together in a backyard.

You oughta watch a chicken some time it is more of a doemestacated BOP it will eat anything a quail is more of prey because of its size and what it eats sorry for the horrible spelling the new system doe not let my spell check work with Chrome browser
