Difference in store bought vs your own egg shells

Got to finally use some eggs my own chickens laid this morning and wow what a difference in the egg shells themselves. store bought ones crack easy and are thin. my SO had to really whack em good on the pan to crack em and he remarked about how thick the shells were. Now if they will just lay enough for me to make 25 creme brule's for christmas dessert !!!

My eggs have much thicker shells than store bought eggs.

Egg production is really down here and I've had to buy eggs. I always wind up with pieces of shell in the skillet! The shells are so thin and fragile, they shatter into so many small pieces. I love my eggs. You really have to give them a good whack, and they usually break cleanly in two, no annoying little parts to fish out of the hot skillet

Oh, it's amazing how much stronger our eggs are. I don't know if it's the type of chicken or not....
Sooooo Creme' Brulees......where do you live again?? That is my favorite dessert.

All my eggs from all the breeds we have have thicker shells, even the ones that are laying daily. I do give mine free choice of oyster shell too. Maybe production birds who lay like machines also have a predisposition towards thin shells, but I wonder if it's related moreso to feed.

Yuppers--nice shells from our girls too (well we did have 2 shelless ones when they first started to lay)!

Um, you gonna have to make extra Creme Brulee's.....

lol Thanks for the offers of help with Creme Brule, its not that hard to make and of course its always fun to play with a blow torch in the kitchen

the trick to a good brule, is patience and strain the final mixture before pouring! silky smooth! mmmmmmmmmmm!!

I kinna think that maybe store eggs are thin shelled on purpose. people might get confused and think something is wrong with their egg if it doesnt crack the first try. I have free choice oyster shell out, layer pellets, calf manna pellets as a treat and any and all kitchen scraps plus they free range during the day. makes for some thick shells! and right now I am so happy, they have decided the tangled mess of stickers and brush next to their coop needs cleaning up. they are annihilating the stickers! yes!

I can't resist peeking at the factory eggs when I pass them in the store, but it always makes me a little sad. The shells are so thin they're almost transparent! And the white eggs have little gray hairline cracks everywhere - ugh. I hate to think of people buying those and not knowing the difference.

My chickens' eggs have beautiful thick smooth shells, and I especially love seeing all the color variation when I look in my cartons. And don't even get me started on the quality of the egg inside. We chicken farmers are really lucky people.
