Sleep where in their coop? Or are the nest boxes not in the coop?

Also where are the nest boxes located in relation to pop door, assuming they're in the coop? It kinda helps them "wipe off their feet" if they have to walk a little across clean bedding to get to the boxes before laying.

Their nest box is in their run but they have a covered run and they sleep in their coop on roost i out down a lot of fresh hay in their run i’m hoping it helps.

Makes sense, thanks for clarifying. It's most likely then that the cause for the soiling is not enough clean dry material to naturally wipe off their feet before they get in nest box, so they're getting a little residual foot dirt onto eggs as they move around in the box.

I use pine shavings and never had a problem till my ducks decided to make them sleeping boxes!!!

That's totally normal around here. Don't even get me started on how dirty the duck eggs are. This time of the year the area directly around the coops is so muddy and I haven't yet trained them to wipe their feet on tiny door mats.

Yep. Even with fresh straw they like to bury them. About twice a week we get one so dirty I chuck it into the woods.

It might help, also, to collect your eggs a little more often, if someone is at home during the day. It makes sense that if an egg is laid in the morning and not collected till evening, the rest of the chickens have a chance to muck it up when they are getting in and out of the nest to lay their own egg.

Thinking it's the straw, I use pine shavings in the nest box & their enclosure, don't have issues with eggs getting dirty.
