what are the colourful sticks/straws for? How is the string at the open door end attached and to what? I know this should be obvious but hell im a doc not a hunter LOL god knows thats the truth!

OK, I have been following this post, and this creature does not want to be trapped. However, it is very happy since it appears you are feeding it every night with the ineffective traps.

So, I suggest you take the very thin brass spring out of an old alarm clock. Wind it tightly around a match stick, then insert it into a piece of very tough gristle. Then carefully withdraw the match stick. Mix the gristle into some ripe hamburger and leave it out overnight in the area of your hen yard. Make sure your dogs and cats are in the house for this operation.

Most carnivores do not chew their food real well. The gristle and the spring will probably be swollowed whole. Then the digestive juices in the animals stomach will eat away the gristle and the spring will open up. I doubt the animal will survive this.

Definately not a nice thing to do, but very effective.

Aran, sorry it wasn't clear. The `sticks' are pipe cleaners (grandkids were here this morning and these items were left on the floor, so I appropriated them).

Here is another shot. The cordage is really just for demonstration (a light test fishing line would work just as well). The pipe cleaner can be replaced by any long twisty tie. The point is to have pred. just barely pull on the bait and the line will be pulled just enough to set off the trap with the beast in the back (bypass trigger plate by attaching line directly to the trigger release arm). If you play with the trigger catch just a bit you can set it so that it is barely riding the door (should go off with the slightest tug on bait). Use a short stick to slide bait into position in back of trap and just hang it over bar until you're ready to tie it to the line.
Leave one door closed if possible.

Rufus: I'll add that method to my file! (I'd probably be giving up about now and mixing some antifreeze in a can of catfood...).

rufus im sure that would work mate but I would be next in line for execution if my wife found out i was thinking of doing something like that. Having said that im getting closer each day to using poison.

Hello this may sound stupid but you can goto tool rental place and rent traps and you may want a bigger trap than the one you have then wrap it with hardware cloth like others have suggested and only use one door with the bait at the end like the person is trying to show you. maybe if you rent one bigger the person there can show you how to set it.
