DISASTER!!!!!!!!!!1

nope since I have been locking the birds away inside the coops at night i have not had a single injury but the mongrel weasel or whatever it is has not been caught in the trap either...very frustrationg but i will keep trying.

quick update all...so I have not caught anything in the traps yet nor have i had the opportunity to shoot the weasel. My wife did however see on two occasions now a possum snooping around the outside of the run. It is coming out of a predictable place at a reasonably predictable time according to the missus so tomorrow when it comes out Im gonna shoot it because I am never again taking any chances with predators around my birds. I continue to bait the trap but seriously the darn thing goes in the trap when its not set and not when it is. I can only set the trap at night when we know for certain that both of our cats and dog are in the house locked away for fear of the trap killing one of them.

I know the possum probably had nothing to do with the slaughter at our place but it is not snooping around innocently and Im going to kill it...any thoughts? Am i doing the right thing? Is killing a possum legal..i guess i need to know that before i proceed.

Of course, if you are looking to make possum stew, go for the head and make sure you don't miss.

mate i have eaten and enjoyed possum stew in new zealand but our possums are a different animal...google images "new zealand opposum" to see what they look like. I wonder if the things over here taste the same. So what you are saying is its ok to kill possums? Do i need a license to shoot it on my own property? I have an air rifle ( 1100f/second) with hunting pellets...from 20feet this should kill the thing correct? I have sighted in the scope and from 60yards I managed to hit a quarter size target fairly regularly.

Dont know if its legal where you are but they are considered varmits here and expendable, and even if it is S.S.S.

You might try a varmit call, its an electric(battery) thing and some are reasonably cheap. Some have little remote controls and you can get them with wounded rabbit sounds, and several other prey calls to attract that weasel into gun range! Available at sporting goods and hunting retailers, also from catalogs like cabelas.

Be ready because they work and predators will get in your pocket trying to get to what is making that call. I have seen coyotes come within arms reach from a blind looking for a free meal.

good hunting

We were losing one here and there, until we put up an acre of Premier1 electric poultry fencing, a year ago. Fingers crossed, haven't lost anything but an egg or two; found lovely black racer in there one day... but so far so good. The fence's lateral lines (nylon and metal) are all electrified. The chickens' and guineas' feathers insulate them, but cats and dogs YELP, and we assume the 'coons and Reddy Fox do the same, since they all use that nice wet nose for..well, nosing around. I wish I could let them all totally free range again, but this acre is wooded, and the girls (and their 2 boy friends) think it is Eden... ( I hope)

i cant find the varmit call on the cabela website. Is it called something else? I did an ebay search and found one for calling deer but it was $120 and said nothing about weasels, possums. If i can get what you are talking about that would freakin rock!
