looks like you had them all set up awesomely..sorry I was soo distracted today and I hadnt slept really in the last two days so I was all over the place running back n forth and gazing at my chicks...lol I dozed off briefly on the floor watching them doze earlier.........this has been such a great experience :)

Don't you want to build when there is still some frost?  That way the ground is hard so the big machinery wont sink into the soil.  Also, they dig until the ground is frost free, then dig a few more feet, and they know that they dug a good solid foundation with the 'roots' of the foundation below your frost line.

Important.

Anyway, @Amberjem
I LOVE your chick rainbow!  Gotta say, I really want a gray/blue chicken :hit don't have one.  We picked out one EE from the PULLET bin last spring that was close to gray/blue.....  grew into a really great color, totally different from any other chicken we had..... BUT it of course turned into a ROO!!

Sad, sad.....

Ah well.

Too bad about your we turning out to be a too, did you keep him? Imagine his beautiful babies!?

Here they can dig with frost in the ground however as long as it freezes over night you have to supply heat to the foundation until its set. Otherwise you risk it not setting right or cracking. Heating the ground while concrete dries raises construction costs quite a bit.

so violet did the oddest thing, mind you she is NOT Broody although I kinda wish she would so she can brood the chicks but, anyways so she laided and egg last night and I totally forgot to go out to get it and I went out early and she was still sitting on the egg keeping it from freezing......... she hasnt stayed in the nest since has been out n about totally acting like a reg chicken...but she made sure her offering of an egg didnt get froozen
