The ones that I know what they are are buff orps, Partridge Rock (the brown chipmunks), BJG, and RIR. The rest are a mystery. I'm starting to think the yellow ones with stripes are Golden comets.@Razadia I've probably asked a million times, but what were your chicks again? I especially like those brown/chipmunk ones. Super cute.
Then I shall hype about this self watering chili tray. It's now been 12 days since I filled it with water. They have used about half of it. And I'm guessing quite a lot of it just evaporates into the house, since the humidity inside is pretty low. So they will go for about a week and a half still with the same water, for a total of three weeks. Not too bad. And they're growing nicely. It's now been about 6 weeks since I planted them, and the sprouts came up 4-5 weeks ago, depending on the variety a bit.
The growth will probably increase once I get the proper grow light on top of them, the manufacturer should have mailed it already. Then I can put that bulb back in the mini greenhouse for the tomatoes. They don't need light yet, since they were planted yesterday. They're in 28C (82F) soil now. I think I'm going to try to get them up on a similar rig as quickly as possible though, this keeps the moisture a lot stabler than the mini greenhouse does. I still haven't found a container that would fit nicely in there, otherwise I would rig it up the same way. I would need a 8"x16" tray for that. Hopefully something that's about 2" deep.
Sam, you missed the chick video!![]()
I think it's cool how this shared custody thing works. The chicks seem to be equally imprinted on both girls, earlier today they were very keen on staying under Wilma, but now in the afternoon, they were sleeping under Emma, and Wilma even went outside to take a dust bath on her own. Has anyone else tried hatching with several mommies?
Oh, and another interesting thing. We're down to just one layer at the moment, Töyhtis. The mommies let her come into the nest to lay her egg, and then they brood it there. No fighting occurs, what so ever. The roo is pretty calm about things too, but what I'm worried about is the four adolescent cockerels we've also got in there. They seem to be pretty mellow still, but I'm sure they'll start manning up soon. I wouldn't mind culling them, but there's hardly anything to eat on them yet. I'm just afraid that when the chicks start getting more active, their paths will cross with the teen cockerels's.
Just grab the Embed link for the video. How do I make that play as a video in my post? I can't figure it out? @Amberjem you've done it before
Debster, you need to take a nap. Some sort of cardio might improve your sleep too. How are you with hand weights? Doing long sets with 5lbs hand weights while watching TV is a nice way to work up a good sweat. You could just take a couple of soda bottles and fill them with water and use those. Or sand, if you want some more weight.
Nope, the chicks would switch broodies when ever they wanted. No one ever got in a fight.Sam, how big are the pots? How old are the plants? I want to compare![]()
Raz, no trouble with them trying to hog chicks or anything?
